Summary of PhD Program:
This project will address the hypothesis that the development of epigenetic changes in muscle may contribute to the long-term persistence of weakness in ICU survivors, which in turn may provide a new target for therapeutic intervention. Epigenetic mechanisms lead to functionally relevant changes in gene expression without altering the genetic code and have been implicated in permanent effects of transient environmental hazardous exposures/stressors on health. The most stable epigenetic change is DNA (de)methylation, which can persist for years and has been associated with long-lasting alterations in gene expression. Others include histone modification and expression of non-coding RNAs.

In recent years, offshore wind energy development has moved towards the deployment of (very) large wind power farms. A wind farm can consist of hundreds of wind turbines (WTs), each of capacities of 10MW and higher, with total capacities of the order of more than a GW. In the next decades, Europe has the ambition to install up to 330GW in its offshore basins, increasing the installed offshore capacity by more than a factor ten. In the current project, we therefore aim to investigate the process of vitamin D-mediated transcriptional repression both in vivo and in vitro, using transgenic mouse models and cell culture systems in which the VDR can only transcriptionally repress gene expression. We will examine the effect of experimentally-induced acute insomnia and chronic insomnia on pain and pain sensitivity, and assess hypothesized underlying (glial and neuronal) brain mechanisms in 2 work packages using cutting-edge pain, neuroscience and sleep medicine methods. As such, this project will elevate sleep-pain interaction research in chronic pain beyond the state-of-the-art.

Summary of PhD Program:
Optical sensors are widely used in the agro-food sector to measure and monitor product quality. At the Livestock Technology research group of KU Leuven, we develop innovative and customized near-infrared spectral sensors to measure the composition of raw milk whilst being extracted from the cow’s udder. The obtained information can be used in real-time to separate milk based on its properties, safeguarding the quality of the delivered milk, or to create milk batches with unique characteristics. Moreover, as the production of milk is a dominant factor in the metabolism of dairy cows, involving a very intense interaction with the blood circulation, the extracted milk contains valuable information on the health status of the cow.

Summary of PhD Program:
The focus of the PhD-student will be on the technological side, which consists of twomajor parts. First, you will be responsible for developing a robust acquisition process that will be used to create a dataset of high-quality images for grosslesion scoring. This includes the hardware setup (camera, lighting, referenceboards, etc.) and post-processing algorithms (contrast enhancement, backgroundsegmentation, etc.) to minimize variation that is not caused by pathology.
