1. Fully Funded PhD Position in A Behaviourally Informed Approach to Reducing the Risk of Unintentional Doping from Supplement Use in Tennis
Summary of PhD Program:
The overarching aim of the PhD is to develop a behaviourally informed approach to preventing unintentional doping through supplement use in tennis5. The programme of research will examine [1] the extent of supplement use in tennis and the drivers of this behaviour, [2] existing empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of supplements to improve tennis performance and [3] the barriers and enablers of tennis player adherence to risk minimisation supplement use guidelines.
Application Deadline: 02 June 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Injury monitoring and the effectiveness of injury prevention strategies in English secondary schools
Summary of PhD Program:
The next step of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the START injury prevention programme in adolescents within English secondary schools. Before we can evaluate the effectiveness of START we need to understand the injury problem in English secondary schools. This is currently unclear, with little data on time loss from PE/school sport due to injury. Given the limited resources (e.g., expertise, time) in schools to monitor injury, traditional epidemiological research is not possible. Therefore, there is a need to work with key stakeholders in schools to develop a novel approach to understanding the magnitude of injuries, how this affects PE/school sport participation and how START may be effective at reducing injuries.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of strategies to support injured adolescents, and minimise the negative impact associated with injury
Summary of PhD Program:
Physical education (PE) and sport participation are two key contexts for adolescents to undertake physical activity. Participation within PE and sport offers many health and performance benefits (Eime et al., 2013). However, one negative consequence of PE and sport participation is the risk of injury, including long-term injuries (e.g., anterior cruciate ligament injury). Such long-term injuries can have significant implications for an individual’s health-related quality of life (e.g., Dipnall et al., 2022), especially during adolescence when there are a range of holistic developmental outcomes (e.g., physical, academic, psychological, psychosocial).
