6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Earth Observation Remote Sensing

Summary of PhD Program:

The research focuses on the retrieval of snow and ice parameters and their dynamics using multimodal Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations. The aim is to explore two scientific topics within the cryosphere domain. The first topic involves analyzing SAR interferometry to generate time series of digital elevation models, which will facilitate the quantification of changes in glaciers and ice sheets on a large scale for assessing and estimating mass balance. The second topic centers on the characterization and identification of glacier crevasses and their dynamics over time through high-resolution SAR data.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in modeling fracture in soft materials

Summary of PhD Program:

The Computational Mechanics of Building Materials (CMBM) aims to understand and predict mechanical failure in materials and structures. By combining numerical modeling tools with tailored laboratory experiments and theoretical models, we create a holistic perspective on mechanical failure, bridging the gap between material behavior at the small scale and principles governing catastrophic failure at the system level. CMBM is a highly interdisciplinary and international research team.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing innovative plasmonic materials

Summary of PhD Program:

The research focuses on developing innovative plasmonic materials. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are strong photon-induced collective hot-electron coupling effects, which can create intense and sensitive electromagnetic near field. SPR and LSPR have found intriguing successes in biosensing, control switches, signal amplifiers and modulators, and high-performance photocatalysis. The conventional plasmonic materials include noble metals, e.g. gold, which was extensively used in biosensing research in our group.

Fully Funded PhD Position in oxide thin film growth – Nanoscale electrostatic control in ferroelectric thin films through lattice chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of the doctoral project is to explore the potential of the chemistry of the lattice (charged off-stoichiometric layers, chemical variation in layered compounds, etc…) as an additional degree of freedom to act on the ferroelectric order in striking contrast with the conventional depolarizing-field tuning strategy. Using our unique capacity to engineer oxide thin films interfaces with atomic precision, combined with our state of the art non invasive optical probe of polarization in thin films, we will advance the exploitation of the surface chemistry in oxide ferroelectric thin films.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in integrated photonics for levitation optomechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

Optical levitation in vacuum is an emerging branch of optomechanics exploiting lasers, optical cavities and RF traps for trapping and manipulating nanoparticles’ dynamics in engineered potentials. Motivated by both, exploring the limits of quantum mechanics, and exceptional sensitivity to inertial and force sensing, Levitodynamics is striving for miniaturization to both increase the robustness of experimental platforms and enter unexplored physical regimes. Hereby, one essential milestone is the development of on-chip levitation platforms integrating state of the art integrated photonics and RF control.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Monitoring water related mass-balance changes in the Swiss Alps with passive seismic interferometry

Summary of PhD Program:

At the interface of seismology, hydrogeology, and energy sciences, this project aims to advance the knowledge of how Earth’s shallow fluid systems change over time and space. Being able to closely observe and monitor these processes is pivotal in enhancing our understanding and management of critical resources such as water and energy, as well as geohazards. Switzerland is already heavily affected by climate change, with long hot and dry periods in summer, inexorably melting glaciers and snow-poor winters. In particular, in the Swiss Alpine region, these mass-balance changes have significant impacts on slope stability, induced seismicity and groundwater recharge.
