4. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Edgar lab focus on endosome and exosome membrane trafficking, with a specific interest in the role of tethered exosomes in health and disease. Exosomes are small, extracellular vesicles with roles in intercellular communication. Exosomes are generated initially as intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) within multivesicular bodies (MVBs), and become termed ‘exosomes’ upon fusion of the MVB with the plasma membrane. The Edgar lab have shown that cells can retain exosomes on their plasma membrane (see ‘Tetherin is an exosomal tether), although how and why this occurs remains largely unexplored. This retention of exosomes at the cell surface is dependent on the anti-viral protein tetherin, which plays a similar role in the retention of several enveloped viruses.

T cells drive immune activation and promote clearance of infections and cancer. However, their function can provoke autoimmune and allergic inflammation. The immune system therefore employs a variety of suppressive mechanisms, collectively known as immunoregulatory mechanisms, to restrain excessive T cell activation and prevent autoimmune and allergic inflammation. However, such suppressive mechanisms also powerfully inhibit anti-tumour immunity to drive deleterious immunosuppression in cancer. The laboratory utilises mouse genetics, cellular immunology and molecular biology to understand molecular mechanisms of immunity and immune suppression in cancer and inflammation.

12. Postdoctoral Position in Forest-focused Supply Chain Policies in West Africa

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Guinean forests of West Africa are a critical ecosystem in global biodiversity conservation efforts. The region is also a global hotspot for cocoa cultivation, home to more than 7 million hectares of cocoa production that continues to expand into the remaining forest ecosystems. Deforestation is tied to cocoa yields and food demands in existing cocoa areas. As yields and soil fertility decline in existing farms, farmers seek out new forests to produce food in the near term and expand their cocoa plots over longer periods. Without interventions to enhance the sustainability and productivity of cocoa farms, deforestation will continue.

20. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Prof Martin Welch (Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge) to investigate the global “interactome” of Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum sensing (QS) molecules. However, recent evidence indicates that QS signals likely also bind to a wealth of additional protein targets too. The successful applicant will deploy a state-of-the-art proteomic approach called “PISA” to identify these novel potential targets, and will then use the tool of protein chemistry and molecular microbiology to investigate the functional consequences of ligand binding.

23. Judith E. Wilson Poetry Fellow

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Judith E. Wilson Poetry Fellowship is designed to enable practising poets to spend a period as members of the Faculty of English, bringing together the practice of poetry and their academic study. The cost of the Fellowship is met from the Judith E. Wilson Fund, formed from a donation to the Faculty of English by Judith E. Wilson, a life-long friend of Dame Edith Evans. The Fellowship is available for nine months from 15 September 2023.

The Fellow is expected to reside in Cambridge during that period and will, it is hoped, be affiliated with a Cambridge College. They will also be invited to take some part in the work of the Faculty, by arranging workshops or readings (including, in term, three hours of formal contact time for students per week), and to pursue their own projects. The role is designed to further the writing of poetry, rather than academic research. The Judith E. Wilson Committee will discuss a possible programme of work with the successful candidate.
