We are seeking a candidate for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant position within Professor Ares’ research group at the Department of Engineering Science (Central Oxford). The post is funded by Innovate and is fixed-term to the 28th May 2025. For quantum computers to be used practically, a large number of qubits need to be controlled with absolute precision and without errors which is an extremely difficult task. The need to calibrate individual qubits, either to maximise fidelity initially or when parameters drift, constitutes a complicated and repetitive process, requiring deep understanding of the set-up and “muscle memory”. You will develop scalable and autonomous calibration frameworks to optimise quantum device performance. Machine-learning based algorithms will then make an informed decision about the appropriate calibration routine, which will be implemented by a scalable low-level control software platform, portable to different qubit types. You should possess a Ph.D/D.Phil (or be near completion*) in a relevant subject. You should have experimental expertise in electrical characterisation of quantum devices at cryogenic temperatures and have a strong background in the theory of quantum devices.

Current global ambitions for malaria elimination focus on the margins of stable malaria transmission, where countries have enjoyed economic development, and have already made substantive progress toward international development targets. Conversely, the heartland of the global malaria burden remains entrenched in poor, low-income countries of Africa. Without a better understanding of the relationships between parasite exposure and disease outcome in these countries it will be hard to predict the impacts of current, and future interventions as part of efforts to define a global future where no one should die of malaria. Data from a network of hospitals in Africa will be the basis of new research. Examples of how hospital data might provide insights into the changing malaria burden in Africa are already available. For example, hospital-based studies have shown a) mean ages of pediatric malaria presentation have increased with declining community levels of parasite prevalence; b) increasing proportions of severe malaria admissions with cerebral complications have been observed at some sites following an increase in community-based intervention coverage and a decrease in infection prevalence; and c) crude estimates of hospital admission rates from selected areas have been used, over short periods of surveillance, to demonstrate the inconsistencies in assuming that linear increases in vector control coverage can solely explain the changes in disease burden. However, studies already published have not used standard methodologies, preventing detailed comparison between settings.

51. Postdoctoral Scientist – pre-clinical development of GMP compatible methodologies for protein and VLP production
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the Jenner institute, at the Nuffield Department of Medicine. You will participate in the research programme led by Professor Sumi Biswas to develop malaria transmission-blocking vaccines. You will be responsible for liaising and coordinating with industrial and/or academic collaborators where required, and help supervise students and other members of the group. You will operate laboratory equipment used for all aspects of immunology/vaccine development, and interpret results development, contributing to immunology/vaccine expertise, as well as supervising students and other members of the group as required. It is essential that you hold a doctoral degree (or close to completion) in a subject relevant to vaccine development / protein expression and purification, together with the ability to be self-motivated, technically competent and capability of working independently in a laboratory. You will have the ability to research complex issues, interpret, analyse, and present scientific data and write factual reports. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with others is essential.

52. Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Single Molecule Imaging of Chromatin Replication
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
In this project, the Postdoctoral Research Assistant will investigate the molecular mechanisms of chromatin replication using single-molecule imaging, biochemical and biophysical approaches. The project aims to uncover how specific epigenetic marks and histone variants affect nucleosome dynamics during DNA replication. Please see the Job Description for further details of the role. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the project and project planning in consultation with the PI and other members of the group. You will be expected to communicate your research at internal and external meetings and to collaborate in the preparation of scientific papers and reports. Applicants should possess (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related field. The research requires experience in the production of recombinant proteins and a range of biochemical and biophysical approaches to study proteins and their interactions. The post holder will have the opportunity to teach. This post is available for up to 3 years in the first instance.
