The successful candidate will be a team member of the interdisciplinary research program in the laboratory of Dr. Hui-Chen Lu (http://www.lulaboratory.com/) in the Gill Center (http://www.indiana.edu/~gillctr/Lu.shtml) at IUB. Cannabis use continues to be high among adolescents and is increasing in young adults. This is a significant public health issue as heavy cannabis use during this period is linked to an increased risk for developing affective, addictive, or psychotic disorders later in life. We are interested to determine whether adolescent cannabis use disrupts the maturation of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), critical for working memory and executive function. We have developed a mouse model of adolescent cannabis use by adolescent administration of Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary intoxicating component of cannabis and found enduring deficits in PFC-mediated behaviors. With support from NIDA, we aim to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these findings and evaluate mechanism-based potential therapies to reverse the behavioral and cognitive abnormalities caused by adolescent THC. A combination of electrophysiology, multi-photon imaging, viral vectors, molecular and biochemical approaches have been established in Lu laboratory.

14. Postdoctoral Position: Molecular Genetic Mechanisms of Male Killing in the Spiroplasma-Drosophila Symbiosis
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
A postdoctoral position is available in the Newton laboratory (https://biology.indiana.edu/about/faculty/newton-irene-garcia.html), Department of Biology, Indiana University, Bloomington. Our lab investigates mechanisms of symbiosis across insect-microbe systems and uses a combination of genomic/bioinformatic approaches and microbiological, cell biological, genetic and developmental approaches. This position is focused on the bacterial symbiont Spiroplasma poulsonii and characterization of the toxin used by the bacterium to kill male offspring in Drosophila melanogaster. Spiroplasma secretes an androcidin (known as Spaid) that causes this dramatic phenotype. Remarkably, Spaid distinguishes between male and female hosts during infection, killing 99-100% of male offspring while leaving females unharmed. Evidence suggests that Spaid acts through the sex determination pathway to 1) recognize male from female host and 2) induce widespread apoptosis in male but not female embryos. How Spaid carries out these molecular functions is unclear. It is also unclear if D. melanogaster host populations have evolved resistance to Spaid toxicity. Understanding which host proteins Spaid interacts with during infection, whether polymorphisms within these proteins confer toxin resistance, and how modification of these proteins causes male killing will illustrate how a naturally occurring host-parasite interaction unfolds at the molecular level. This project will involve characterizing the molecular targets of Spaid and identifying genetic suppressors in the natural host.

The position offers an opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary project that targets the rational design of metal-ligand single atom heterogeneous catalysts. Improved efficiency in industrial chemical processes requires new catalyst development to satisfy increasing global chemical demands and energy challenges. Traditional heterogeneous catalysts, usually consisting of metal nanoparticles on an oxide support, are effective for many processes, but have limitations for chemical conversions that require a high degree of reaction selectivity. In this work, the uniformity and structure of single transition metal atom catalytic centers is determined by rationally tailored molecular ligands to ensure high reactivity, product selectivity, and stability. Catalysts will be characterized before, during, and after catalytic reactions to (1) examine and improve high selectivity, (2) design higher stability in metal-ligand single atom catalysts, and (3) test this class of catalysts for several reactions. The reactions studied will include hydrogenation, hydrosilylation, and other industrially important reactions that probe the metal-ligand catalyst performance. The central theme of the work is to rationally design, synthesize, characterize, and test new catalysts on model supports and on high surface area oxide supports.

A postdoctoral position is available in the Sensorimotor Neurophysiology Lab, under the direction of Dr. Hannah Block. This is a grant-funded position for a minimum of two years and is renewable for up to two additional years. The position includes benefits and compensation is congruent with NIH stipend levels. The earliest anticipated start date is 1 August 2022. The focus of the NIH-funded project is the neural basis of multisensory and motor learning in the control of hand movement. The project comprises behavioral, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging experiments in healthy adults. The Sensorimotor Neurophysiology Lab (https://www.blocklab.net/) specializes in visuo-proprioceptive control of upper limb movement. We have a robotic manipulandum (Kinarm Endpoint lab, BKIN) and various custom touchscreen setups for behavioral and perceptual experiments, along with 2D virtual reality displays. For transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), we have equipment for single, paired pulse, and repetitive stimulation protocols (Magstim) as well as neuronavigation (Brainsight, Rogue Research) and EMG. The Imaging Research Facility (IRF), located across the street, has a Siemens Prisma MRI system and associated computing system exclusively for research use, as well as a mock MRI scanner for subject training (https://www.indiana.edu/~irf/home/). The IRF employs a full-time MR physicist and technicians who run the scanner.

The overall goal of the Evans-Molina lab is to define the molecular and signaling pathways in the pancreatic β cell that contribute to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Much of this work is focused on the regulation of calcium homeostasis within the secretory pathway of the pancreatic β cell and testing how loss of calcium within this compartment leads to endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi stress and impaired proinsulin processing. In addition, we have a translational research interest focused on defining the natural history of β cell loss in type 1 diabetes, the use of “omics” approaches to identify novel serum biomarkers of early β cell stress in pre-symptomatic type 1 diabetes, and the development of novel therapeutics aimed at preventing or reversing type 1 diabetes.

The newly formed Adolescent Behavioral Health Research Program at the Indiana University School of Medicine is currently seeking applications from highly motivated, team-oriented candidates for a research postdoctoral fellowship in neuroimaging. The full-time position spread over 2-3 years will focus on honing expertise and research acumen in neuroimaging risky decisions in youth at particularly high risk for the development of substance use disorders and risky sexual behaviors.
