This study aims to determine best criteria for initiation of breathing support in children with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs). Children with NMDs develop progressive sleep disordered breathing (SDB) due to weakness of their breathing muscles. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is the standard breathing support therapy for children with NMDs. Recently, an expert group developed criteria for early NIV initiation in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD); however, these criteria have not been validated yet, and it is unclear whether they will work for children with other NMDs. The aim of this study is to compare benefits of NIV and therapy adherence in children with NMDs initiated on NIV based on usual care versus the new criteria for early NIV initiation.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The experimental astroparticle physics group at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) is looking for up to two excellent postdoctoral fellows to join our exciting research program in IceCube, P-ONE and developments towards future photodetection technology. IceCube is the largest neutrino telescope in operation, detecting atmospheric and cosmic neutrinos in the Antarctic ice. P-ONE is the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Explorer, a proposed new neutrino detector off the coast of Canada, which seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of the site for an eventual multi-km3 neutrino telescope.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This position would be to do research in theoretical gravitational physics and/or related subjects in quantum theory, such as black hole evaporation, black hole information, quantum cosmology, and related areas. The position is for two years (with the second year conditional upon satisfactory progress in the first year), beginning in Fall 2023. Compensation is at $50,000 per annum with supplemental benefits.

The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) is being sought to conduct quantitative data analysis for an ongoing project related to the public health funding, services, and resources and adolescent health. The PDF will be an active member of the EMERGE Research Lab and will be involved in the development, implementation, and analysis of various research projects.
The PDF will work under the supervision of Dr. Roman Pabayo and be offered a supportive environment that emphasizes gaining and enhancing skills, thinking critically and innovatively, while working independently and within a team. The PDF will be exposed to a project involving adolescent health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and involves data analysis, interpretation of results, publication and knowledge translation.

The postdoc will learn our procedures and apply those with our 2 state of the art multi-probe ultra high vacuum tools to exactingly fabricate, image at the atom scale and measure transport properties of proto quantum devices. Examples of planned devices include an atom-defined SET that is free of the stray charge limitations that plague other designs, and, a Pauli spin-blockade magnetometer that can be extremely portable and room temperature operable while requiring only electronic controls (no lasers as for NV center-based sensors).

The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. The successful fellow will be conduction research in cellular models of disease, animal models of disease and correlated these results with human biospecimens from patients suffering from lymphatic disorders.
