Summary of PhD Positions:
We are looking for an electrical engineer, computer scientist, statistician or mathematician who is interested in pursuing a PhD on the intersection of Bayesian Machine Learning and Wireless Communications. The successful candidate will work towards developing and analyzing intelligent autonomous systems (agents) for wireless networks. Such systems will be able to learn from previous experience (data), actively sense their surrounding environment, and quickly adapt to new conditions; with the goal of providing reliable communication services to mobile users, IoT devices, self-driving cars, and other intelligent agents. Summary of PhD Positions:
Illumination optics plays an important role in modern society. Products like mobile phones, lamps, car headlights, road lighting and even satellites all utilize illumination optics. A good optical design determines, for example, the energy efficiency of illumination devices, the minimization of light pollution or the sensitivity of sensors in satellites. The design of novel, sophisticated optical systems requires advances in the mathematical description and numerical simulation methods for these systems. The optics applied in illumination is non-imaging, in contrast to for example a camera lens which is imaging. In non-imaging optics we study the transfer of light from a source to a target. 9. PhD Position in Engineering Collagen Architecture
Summary of PhD Positions:
In this PhD research, which is part of the Dutch Gravitation program Materials Driven Research, we will exploit our recently developed cartilage organoids, produced from human chondrocytes or progenitor cells, to grow thick hyaline cartilage. This tissue growth process will be perturbed in an in vitro culture system to create varying collagen fiber architectures to understand how this could be influenced by the physical-chemical environment during tissue growth.
Finally, smart biomaterials will be used to create unique tissue growth environments to guide the formation of the desired collagen architectures and applied in ex vivo osteochondral explant bioreactor systems to simulate in situ cartilage regeneration. In addition to molecular biological, biochemical, histological assessment methods, advanced microscopic methods will be used to visualize the collagen architecture. Summary of PhD Positions:
In this PhD research, we will first develop methods to generate large volumes of cartilage organoids from human induced chondro-progenitor cells (hiCPCs) modified for allogeneic use. Currently, we use animal derived additives to grow cartilage organoids from mature chondrocytes. In this project, we will adapt these methods for use with progenitor cells. We will explore culture conditions and growth factor additives as well as develop a synthetic replacement for the animal product. Finally, together with consortia partners, we will combine the organoids with unique hydrogels and biofabrication methods to engineer large-scale articular cartilage.

11. PhD Position in active self-organization of DNA-coated colloids
Summary of PhD Positions:
In our lab, we take a biomimetic approach to addressing fundamental questions about biological self-organization. We build experimental model systems using soft materials such as colloids, emulsions, and polymers, that mimic specific features of living systems, such as the ability to self-organize, to move directionally, or to communicate chemically. In this project, you will address the question of how chemical communication can limit the size of self-organization. Many living systems don’t grow in all directions indefinitely but reach some finite length in one or more dimensions and regulate that finite size by sending chemical signals to their neighbors. The physics underlying this size regulation via chemical communication remains poorly understood.

25. PhD Position in Design of High-Voltage Actuators and Electric Field Predictions
Summary of PhD Positions:
Linear electromagnetic actuators form the core of many high-tech, high-performant motion systems. The urge for more performance translates into increasingly aggressive motion profiles, which in turn lead to increased mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal stress gradients in the materials of the actuator. The actuator design should be robust for these increasing stresses. This research focuses on improving the actuator design allowing for higher operating voltages while maintaining good thermal performance and reliability.
This can be achieved by choosing novel material types combining good thermal conductivity and electrical insulation properties or by extending the electrical capabilities of state-of-art materials and combining them with novel cooling technologies. This research will build forward on previous research which focused on high-voltage actuator design and infrastructure. The actuator design was based on an oil flow for electrical insulation and cooling of the actuator. This design shows significant potential, but for practical reasons, oil is not preferred in a vacuum environment which exists in some high-tech systems.

PhD1: Novel devices for analog neuromorphic computing with oscillatory neural networks.
