1. PhD Programs in Biological Sciences

Summary of PhD Positions:

Fish welfare is central for the sustainable growth of aquaculture but, because fish domestication is very recent compared to mammals and birds, knowledge and protocols for assessing welfare in aquaculture is limited. Changes in behaviour (aggression) and reduction in brain size are common effects of fish farming but their importance for fish welfare are unknown.

Smaller brain size and lower cognitive abilities seem related to the less complex farming environment compared to natural fish habitats. The ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) and the lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) are currently used as cleanerfish (a biological alternative for parasite control) in the Atlantic salmon (Atlantic salmon) farming industry.

7. PhD Programs in Drug discovery

Summary of PhD Positions:

In this project, a combination of computer-aided drug design techniques (molecular modelling) and synthetic organic chemistry methods will be used to identify and synthesise novel antiviral treatments, in the form of small-molecule compounds, targeting norovirus NS1-2 protein and the viral polymerase, which represent promising targets for the development of antiviral agents.

These targets will be studied with a series of in silico analyses, which will guide the design and synthesis of novel compounds, able to interfere with the essential functions of these proteins, and therefore to impair the virus life cycle. The new compounds prepared will be evaluated in-house in a series of biochemical assays, and tested for their antiviral properties in world-leading centres for antiviral drug discovery.

Proteins are the basic composition units of life activities and have a vital impact on life being. The structure of proteins is the key to study life cycles, major diseases and drug discovery. However, since the affirmation of proteins, humans are limited in acquiring profound understanding in proteins, which is manifested in the insufficient ability to predict the structure and function of proteins, let alone modifying proteins to meet the needs in a variety of practices. Until 2021, Google DeepMind developed AlphaFold2 [1,2] based on deep learning to improve the accuracy of protein structure prediction and they achieved the prediction accuracy as high as 90%.

This research proposes concepts from the theory of economics to cybersecurity threat mitigation, aided by evolutionary computing (EC) methods to determine optimal defensive configurations. We propose algorithmic transformations of manually constructed ADTs into cost-benefit models representing system-level threats with defensive control measures as benefits. To achieve a risk-proportionate and cost-effective defensive posture for a system, optimal control measures would be determined; fitness functions would be expressed to maximise returns and minimise opportunity costs (for comparative analysis of one control feature to other alternatives).

In this project, we will simulate the plasma in the ion-beam optics and compare with both preliminary experimental results [2] and new data from experiments at Swansea University. We will conduct further numerical work to guide the apparatus development in LhARA and more fully understand the observations once the experimental campaign begins. Owing to the extreme nature of the plasma, and the high computational expense of suitable Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations [3], an efficient way to explore the relevant parameter space is needed.

Brain-inspired neuromorphic computing could overcome the inherent limitations of conventional silicon technology, offering a new generation of faster low-power computing, direct hardware image recognition, and high sensitivity sensors. Typical approaches to physical neuromorphic devices focus on highly-organized architectures of artificial neurons, which fail to replicate the requisite complex synaptic interconnectivity. Nanostructured networks of metal nanoparticles instead offer comparatively inexpensive self-organising networks that inherently display brain-like dynamics in both the neurons and the synapses that link them together.

Summary of PhD Positions:

The strong interaction is the fundamental force that holds together nuclear matter. This force is described by Quantum Chromodynamics, a non-Abelian gauge theory whose fundamental particles are six fermion flavours (the quarks) interacting with eight-gauge bosons (the gluons). Quarks and gluons never appear in final states of the strong interaction. This phenomenon, for which we lack an explanation, is known as colour confinement. Elegant mechanisms of colour confinement have been proposed that are based on the prominent role of field configurations with non-trivial topological properties.

One possible direction is the numerical study of centre vortices, which are topological features of the theory of the strong interaction that are intimately related to confinement. Another possibility is to explore the temperature dependence of confinement through numerical simulations of the hadron spectrum, applying techniques which have not previously been used at non-zero temperature, and which are uniquely suitable for characterising deconfinement and related phenomena, such as resonance broadening.

With the relentless drive for efficiency, design of future Ultra Fan family of aero engines not only include increasing stages of blisks (bladed discs), but there is also a desire for them to be made from more advanced alloys when compared with current Trent generation aero engines. Key to this strategy is their repairability, without which this new family of engines will not be sustainable regarding through life cycle cost. Although these new blisk alloys enable enhanced engine performance they are also likely to be less repairable than their predecessors and therefore assessment and understanding of achievable mechanical properties for repair of these alloys is essential.

Summary of PhD Positions:

One of the main uses of Coil Coatings is on exterior façade panels used in building construction. Coatings are applied to continuous, wide metal strip and then thermally treated so as to induce gelation or crosslinking. Chemistries used include Polyester/Melamine, Polyurethane, PVdF & PVC plastisol amongst others. Currently, as cladding is removed from buildings at the end of life the metal is recycled via melting and then re-casting. During this process the coil coating is incinerated from the metal and so is lost.

In arithmetic one usually considers binary operations (addition, multiplication, subtraction, etc.). These then extend to geometry and physics (addition of vectors, multiplication of operators). In all cases this requires to specify one particular element (zero vector, observer, fixed gauge). Liberation from this constraint is provided by affine structures (affine spaces, bundles with affine fibres) in which no particular point or gauge is selected upfront. However in affine situation there might not be a natural binary operation, one needs to consider a ternary one (roughly a combination of addition and subtraction).
