12. PhD Programs in Scalable Controller Synthesis with Formal Guarantees
Summary of PhD Positions:
Cyber-physical systems are complex systems that combine physical capabilities with computational capabilities. These include medical devices and systems, process controls, autonomous vehicles, avionic systems, energy systems, robots, manufacturing systems, and smart structures. The increasingly complex requirements of cyber-physical systems makes it very difficult to control them or even prove that their specification is met. For this reason, automatic controller synthesis with formal guarantees is an active area of research. However, there exist no scalable and formally correct synthesis methods for arbitrary nonlinear systems whose algorithmic parameters are automatically tuned.

18. PhD Programs in topology optimization and machine learning
Summary of PhD Positions:
When designing mechanical structures, known forms such as e.g. B. standard profiles are used. This supports manufacturability and reasonable costs, but at the same time limits optimality in terms of weight and function. In contrast, so-called top-down approaches aim at technical solutions whose components are defined as little as possible in advance. So e.g. B. via topology optimization, an optimal, previously unknown form of mechanical structures can be determined purely according to functional criteria or weight. Specially trained machine learning algorithms serve as estimators for manufacturability, costs and weight. These methods are used in several projects, e.g. B. in the design of new lightweight structures for robots.

22. PhD Programs in molecular plant pathology
Summary of PhD Positions:
The focus of our group is on plant receptor kinases that perceive endogenous peptides to regulate different aspects of plant physiology in the model plant species Arabidopsis thaliana. We have evidence that a specific family of receptor kinases (together with their endogenous peptide ligands) controls powdery mildew infection success. Members of the same receptor family can promote and inhibit powdery mildew colonization, suggesting a complex genetic and biochemical interplay. The successful applicant will combine plant genetics, involving mutant generation by CRISPR-Cas9, receptor kinase biochemistry, cell biology and plant pathology to study the involvement of this receptor kinase family and their peptide ligands in powdery mildew infection of Arabidopsis.

23. PhD Programs in Nutrition, Microbiology and Immunology
Summary of PhD Positions:
In this PhD project (P01), we study the impact of exclusive enteral nutrition on microbiome signatures and function in pediatric Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease (CD) is one of the two main entities of idiopathic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) alters microbial composition and efficiently induces remission in these patients. In this translational project between basic and clinical sciences, we use germ-free and humanized (gnotobiotic) mouse models as well as ex vivo microbiota continuous culturing (chemostat) and intestinal organoids to explore the molecular mechanisms and functional relevance of microbiome signatures for the anti-inflammatory effects of EEN interventions.
Application Deadlines: January 31st 2023
24. PhD Programs in Nutrition, Microbiology and Immunology
Summary of PhD Positions:
In this PhD project (P18), we study the role of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the pathogenesis of inflammation-associated cancer. Incidence rates of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have increased substantially and IBD patients have a significantly elevated risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Currently there is no cure or effective long-term treatment for IBD, highlighting the crucial need to understand the mechanisms of disease onset and pathogenesis. In this project, we isolate human isolates of Desulfovibrio from patients with different disease background and explore their functional relevance to induce inflammation-associated cancer in germ-free mouse models using disease-relevant synthetic microbial communities.
