24. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cell polarity and grass epidermal development

Summary of PhD Program:

The research group “Stomatal Biology” is welcoming applications for a fully-funded, 4-year PhD student position. Our research group investigates how grasses and succulents form “breathing pores” or stomata on leaves and how different forms contribute to gas exchange physiology. We look for a motivated student with a completed MSc in biology (or equivalent), who is interested in studying how cell polarity guides asymmetric, formative cell divisions in the developing epidermis of the grass leaf. A strong interest (and ideally some experience) in plant development, plant cell biology, and microscopy is required.

The project focuses on cell polarity during leaf epidermal development in the model grass Brachypodium distachyon. Formative, asymmetric cell divisions establish and pattern the different cell types (stomatal cells, hair cells, pavement cells) of the leaf epidermis in grasses. We recently found that BdPOLAR is required for the asymmetric division that forms stomatal subsidiary cells (Zhang et al. 2022 eLife). Here, we will investigate the molecular mechanisms and spatiotemporal dynamics of BdPOLAR and its sister genes in the developing leaf epidermis of B. distachyon.

25. Fully Funded PhD Position in Space Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of the proposed PhD project is to improve our atmosphere model by refining the description of the atmospheric contributions by solar wind ions and micro-meteorites. Solar wind ions (mainly protons, but also helium and heavier ions) release surface material (atoms and molecules) when they encounter solid surfaces. The released surface atoms and molecules become part of the atmosphere. In the inner Solar System, solar wind sputtering is one of the main processes that feeds planetary atmospheres. Micro-meteorites are micro- to millimeter-sized particles that, like larger meteorites, release great amounts of surface material into the atmosphere in form of vapor plumes. While beeing much less stable than solar wind sputtering, micro-meteorite impact vaporization can at times dominate all other atmospheric source processes.

28. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental/ Atmospheric Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The University of Bern is the third largest university in Switzerland. The position offers a world-class environment with an outstanding infrastructure. Carbonaceous particulate matter comprises a large fraction of the atmospheric aerosol and, therefore, badly affects our climate and human health. Measures that aim at improving air quality require that emission sources are apportioned and quantified individually. However, this endeavor has succeeded only for a small fraction of the carbonaceous particulate matter so far. The determination of the long-lived radioisotope 14C (radiocarbon) has become a unique and powerful tool for source apportionment, especially in combination with complementary techniques such as aerosol mass spectrometry.
