1. PhD Programs in Computer Science
Summary of PhD Positions:
Your PhD research is centred around the concept of genomic selection which involves the prediction of the agronomic performance of plants directly from their DNA code. This selection technique allows to routinely screen the potential of thousands of plants before they even emerge from their seed. However, cost-effective application of genomic selection remains challenging and low-cost genotyping and phenotyping strategies are much needed.
Your role is to devise, evaluate and implement cutting edge algorithms to enable low-cost genomic selection. You will be dealing with several aspects of designing and evaluating statistical and mathematical models, machine learning, optimization techniques, software development, simulation, etc. This position is therefore an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and further improve your mathematical and engineering skills.

2. PhD Programs in statistics
Summary of PhD Positions:
Observational data is frequently used to draw causal inferences when a randomised trial is not feasible or ethical. The ‘target trial’ framework attempts to harness design principles from trials to improve the standard of observational epidemiology. Researchers are stimulated to first specify a hypothetical target trial, before trying to emulate it their data, in order to avoid common analytical pitfalls. The approach has helped to resolve conflicting results between observational and randomised studies in studying the effect of hormone therapy on coronary heart disease. It has been applied more recently to guide treatment strategies for antiviral therapy in HIV epidemiology and judge the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines.

Summary of PhD Positions:
We are looking for PhD candidate to develop and study contactless green technology of art objects cleaning based on plasma sources of atomic oxygen in joint project between Research Unit Plasma Technology, of the Ghent (Belgium) and Technical University Eindhoven, Elementary processes in gas discharges (Nederland). While unsustainable development increasingly threatens Europe’s cultural heritage (CH) assets, museums and conservators continue searching for green approaches and materials.
In the preservation of tangible CH assets, carbon-based soiling is among the most significant deteriorations factors. Pollution, vandalism, smoke and fires can cause catastrophic carbon-based contamination to tangible CH assets, and cleaning is essential for their preservation. However, the currently available methods require hazardous chemicals, physical contact, and water, which can be too disruptive to many art materials

4. PhD Programs in Linguistics
Summary of PhD Positions:
The project wants to contribute to a better understanding of the grammar underlying Spanish-English(-Kriol) codeswitching (CS). Its objective is threefold. First, at an empirical level, it provides insight into the way the conflict between synthetic/morphological and analytic/lexical patterns is handled in CS contexts. It therefore looks into the factors governing phenomena like intensification and attenuation, which express a quantitative or qualitative upward or downward scaling of a referent, and are very differently represented in Spanish, English and Kriol.
Despite its common occurrence and varied forms, no research has as yet examined these patterns in a CS context. Second, the project aims at revealing the abstract or context-dependent nature of CS. It therefore observes how the conflict points are administered by multilingual speakers in three communities (Miami and El Paso in the USA, and Belize) that differ in geographical setting, history, and social status of the languages.
Third, it wants to tackle the fragmented knowledge of the nature of CS by developing an integrative theory and assimilating insights from sociolinguistics, structural linguistics, and experimental psycholinguistics. Hence the project adopts a multimethod approach and combines the study of unexplored naturalistic data with an experimental design.

6. PhD Programs in Biology
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are offering a PhD scholarship to unravel the mechanistic basis of hybrid defects. Hybrid defects, such as hybrid mortality and sterility, are post-zygotic isolation barriers that drive speciation by reducing gene flow. These defects can evolve rapidly and occur within species and between incipient species that hybridize. The underlying processes have captivated evolutionary biologists since the early 20th century.
This project will contribute to resolving the genetic and molecular mechanisms that shape divergent hybrid defects within a three-species model system. We will test how nuclear incompatibilities interact with symbiont-mediated incompatibilities. We will also unravel how polygenic hybrid dysfunction is regulated, further uncovering the early enigmatic speciation processes.

Summary of PhD Positions:
We are offering a PhD scholarship to unravel the molecular-genetic mechanisms of host-symbiont interactions. Endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria commonly infect arthropods and can spread rapidly through host populations by inducing cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). The strength of CI varies widely across biological systems and numerous hypotheses have been put forward to explain the underlying mechanisms. This project will contribute to resolving the genetic, molecular, and biochemical mechanisms that shape CI strength from the perspective of Wolbachia and host. To more fully understand the evolution of Wolbachia-induced CI, these mechanisms will be dissected using multiple genetic model systems.

Personal Genomics is now becoming a reality, thanks to the steadily increasing availability of affordable sequencing technology. Despite the great promise of genomics for personal health and precision medicine, most institutions, as well as individuals, are hesitant to share genomic data. Principal reasons are the risk of unethical handling of the data, for example leading to higher insurance costs at the level of individuals. Hence, the build-up of trust for sharing this highly sensitive, identifiable personal information is critical, individually, nation-wide, and internationally.

AFireTest is a 1.5 million EUR project funded by the European Research Council (ERC). Over a total period of 5 years, 3 PhD researchers and 2 post-doc researchers will jointly develop the next generation of fire testing. Current fire testing is based on standardized tests which do not provide in depth understanding of material behavior and the impact of design choices on the fire risk in buildings.
Within the new concept to fire testing (Adaptive Fire Testing), test specifications will be set with a specific goal of maximizing the net information gained from the test, taking into account (i) the current state of knowledge; (ii) the goal of the assessment (e.g., material understanding vs building risk evaluation); and (iii) the costs of performing the test (including environmental costs).

12. PhD Programs in Environment
Summary of PhD Positions:
Heatwaves and droughts are becoming synchronized. In our warmer world, soils dry faster, heating up the air even further. These compound dry–hot events propagate like a wildfire: the drying upwind can trigger heat stress episodes on populations located hundreds of kilometers downwind. What are the physical mechanisms that drive these compound events and cause heat stress episodes on societies? Can we forecast these episodes weeks-to-months in advance using recent technological progress? Can intelligent land management attenuate the intensity and frequency of future events? HEAT will aim to answer these questions.
This will be achieved through a combination of satellite data, physics-driven atmospheric models, artificial intelligence, and state-of-the-art climate model simulations. Altogether, HEAT will enhance preparedness and resilience against extreme hot and dry events by providing accurate seasonal forecasts, novel mechanistic understanding, and land management strategies to mitigate future events and their impact on societies.
