A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Xue Han, in the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity and Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) at the Ohio State University. The main research directions of the Han Lab are to 1) study new mechanisms of immune escape in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies; 2) identify novel immunomodulating pathways and their applications to treat cancer, inflammation, and autoimmune diseases; 3) understand the mechanisms of immune-related adverse events caused by cancer immunotherapy. During her earlier research career in Dr. Lieping Chen’s lab in Yale University, Dr. Han has led several vital projects to characterize PD-1H (VISTA), a recently identified immunomodulating molecule. 1) For the first time, identifying PD-1H as a suppressive receptor on hematopoietic cells and firstly describing promoted anti-tumor immunity in PD-1H deficient mice (J Clinic Invest, 2014). 2) Working with structure biologist, solving crystal structure and finding key unique structural features of PD-1H (PNAS, 2020). 3) In addition to basic immunobiology, Dr. Han’s work shows that PD-1H is an essential molecule to control autoimmune lupus (Science Translational Medicine, 2019).

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The Postdoctoral Scholar position is co-mentored by the laboratories of Dr. Zihai Li and Dr. Ephraim Ansa-Addo, group leaders within the Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University. The over-arching focus of the laboratories is characterizing the roles of various T cell subsets, specifically, regulatory T cells and T follicular helper cells that are present in the tumor microenvironment and their impact on cancer progression. Our research focuses on various aspects of anti-tumor immunity mediated by antigen-specific T cells. Particularly, we are interested in the biology of T follicular helper (TFH) cells, as well as regulatory T (Treg) cells. Our labs are highly collaborative and the selected candidate will work interactively with a multidisciplinary team of physician-scientists, cancer biologists, immunologists, and biomedical informaticians within the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology and OSUCCC.

There is a postdoctoral research position opening in the laboratory of Deliang Guo, PhD, Director of the Center of Cancer Metabolism at The Ohio State University. His laboratory focuses on cancer metabolism, signal transduction, autophagy and miRNA across multiple cancer types, including brain tumors, lung cancer, liver cancer, sarcoma, pancreatic cancer etc. The research also expands to immune-metabolism and collaborate with world-leader in immune-oncology field. His lab was the first to identify EGFR/PI3K signaling upregulates SREBP-1, a membrane-bound transcription factor with a central role in lipid metabolism to control tumor growth (Guo, et al, PNAS, Science Signaling, 2009, Cancer Discovery 2011, Current Pharma Design 2014). Most recently, his lab further unraveled the underlying molecular mechanism linking EGFR/PI3K signaling and glucose to SREBP-1-regulated lipid metabolism. They found that glucose acting as an indispensable activator promotes SREBP signaling pathway via N-glycosylation modification on SCAP protein (Cheng et al., Cancer Cell, 2015). Moreover, they found lipid droplets and miRNA are actively involved in SREBPs regulation and lipid metabolism in malignancies (Geng, et al., Clinical Cancer Research 2016, and Peng et al., Cell Reports 2016, Xiang, et al., Cell Metabolism 2020).

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work in the Center for Advanced Robotic Surgery and the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the OSU Wexner Medical Center, and will be supervised jointly by our Robotic/MIS surgeons and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert Dr. Xia Ning (https://u.osu.edu/ning.104/), an Associate Professor from the Biomedical Informatics Department and the Computer Science and Engineering Department at OSU. The Postdoctoral Fellow will develop advanced AI methods to analyze data generated from robotic surgeries (e.g., kinematics data generated from robotic arms during the cholecystectomy procedures) to understand the behaviors of the surgeons, to predict the outcomes of the procedures, and to evaluate the surgeons’ skills, etc. This is a very unique research opportunity: the Postdoctoral Fellow will have the opportunity to observe robotic surgeries in operation rooms, to access and work on unique robotic surgery data from Da Vinci systems, to collaborate with vendor experts, and to develop advanced AI that can truly impact surgical practices and patient health. Ideal candidates are expected to have a research background in Artificial Intelligence, (Statistical) Machine Learning, and/or Deep Learning, and be familiar with Python.
