1. PHD-POSITION: HEALTH EFFECTS OF FERMENTED FOODS
Summary of PhD Positions:
In this PhD project, which is part of a large European project, we will specifically investigate the role of short chain fatty acids in cardiometabolic health benefits. Short chain fatty acids are metabolites that are present in fermented foods but are also produced in the gut from fermetation of dietary fibre. They are considered as important mediators of human health. The project involves human intervention studies with either pure short chain fatty acids or fermented foods to evaluate their impact on health. Human samples collected during the interventions will be analysed with mass spectrometry based methods.

2. CONSTRAINED OPTIMIZATION OF NONLINEAR UNCERTAIN SYSTEMS
Summary of PhD Positions:
Taking into account various forms of uncertainty is a common challenge in the design of industrial systems: there can be uncertainty on the physical parameters of the model, on the manufacturing process, and/or on the load conditions. At the same time, the solution to design optimization problems involves the numerical solution of partial differential equations, which are already computationally expensive even without uncertainty. The goal of this thesis is to develop mathematical and numerical methods for solving large scale optimization problems featuring uncertainty. The most popular approaches today consist in replacing the objective and constraint functions by some statistically averaged quantities. In this thesis, we will develop more systematic methodologies for computing efficiently the statistics associated to the optima of a family of parameterized constrained optimization problems.

5. PHD STUDENT/POSTDOCTORAL POSITION ON MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR MECHANISMS UNDERLYING NEUROREPAIR IN THE FAST-AGING KILLIFISH (NOTHOBRANCHIUS FURZERI)
Summary of PhD Positions:
There is an unmet need for successful neurorepair in aged patients and therefore, for innovations in therapies. We use the African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), the shortest-living vertebrate laboratory species that displays all cellular and molecular aging hallmarks characteristic to humans, as a model for in-depth investigations into brain aging. Recently, we have discovered that although young killifish are capable of full-blown neurorecovery upon injury, aged killifish lose these abilities. Aged killifish rather mimic the restricted repair capacities of (aged) mammalian brains, including chronic inflammation and glial scarring. In addition, we show a change in the number, morphology and the gene expression of progenitor cells (PCs) in the telencephalon due to aging, indicating a change in the cellular composition of the telencephalon, possibly linked to changes in cell state concerning the potency/failure for full-blown neuro-regeneration upon age.

6. PRECISION LASER SPECTROSCOPY OF SHORT-LIVED ISOTOPES
Summary of PhD Positions:
Is a nucleus spherical or deformed? Do nucleons behave as individual entities or should they be considered as the building blocks of a collective state? How does the structure of an atomic nucleus change when extreme amounts of protons or neutrons are present? These are only a few examples of questions which our group is trying to answer. In cooperation with other international research teams and using the results of experimental and theoretical studies, we probe the unknown properties of the strong interaction. To reach this goal, our research focuses on the structure of exotic nuclei, i.e. nuclei with extreme proton to neutron ratios. Especially among these isotopes, new nuclear phenomena appear such as changes in the conventional shell structure, the presence of new magic numbers, configuration mixing, shape coexistence and nuclear deformation.

7. PHD VACANCY IN RELIGIOUS, SOCIAL AND ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY: CATHOLIC WORKERS’ PARISHES AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN BELGIUM
Summary of PhD Positions:
The interfaculty centre KADOC, the Department of Architecture and the research unit History of Church and Theology (KU Leuven) aim to recruit a full-time four year PhD researcher in the framework of the project Reconquering the city. Pastoral agency and spatial impact of workers’ parishes in Belgium, 1884-1914. In the three decades before World War I, the Belgian Catholic Church sought to regain its influence on the industrial working class through a strategy of socio-pastoral proximity, competing with the growing resonance of the socialist labour movement. The number of Catholic parishes in (sub)urban working-class neighborhoods grew dramatically. By founding these so-called ‘workers’ parishes’, the Church tried to counteract the secularization of the working class and to reassert its claim on the urban territory. By studying a balanced set of case-studies across four dioceses, this project fosters an in-depth understanding of the changes in parish life and socio-pastoral care, evaluating their impact on community identities and the everyday experiences of religion.

9. PHD IN PHILOSOPHY OF TECHNOLOGY
Summary of PhD Positions:
As part of the forthcoming Chair Ethics and AI, the Institute of Philosophy at KU Leuven invites applications for a fully funded PhD position for 4 years about ethics of AI in a global context. Most people agree that ethical AI is about privacy, sustainability and justice, among other things. However, in the global context of developing AI systems one can distinguish multiple ethics guidelines, which has to do with the many conceptions of privacy, sustainability and justice across cultures, regions, and traditions. Moreover, questions often arise with respect to translating an ethical principle into a technological design. Can the principle be translated, and if so, how? Therefore, the research has two goals. The first is to pinpoint the differences and similarities between the many conceptions of moral values that are used in the global context of AI development; the second purpose is to explore the difficulties and possibilities of translating ethics guidelines into norms for developing AI systems.

12. PHD POSITION ON MULTISCALE MODELLING OF ETHYLENE TRANSPORT IN TOMATO FRUIT
Summary of PhD Positions:
Tomato fruit has been successfully used for many years as a model system to study ripening of fleshy fruit at the molecular level. Given their relatively impermeable fruit skin, tomato fruit is expected to develop internal gas gradients, potentially leading to localised hypoxia and ethylene accumulation just beneath the skin. The hypothesis is that this triggers pore formation to facilitate gas transport and alleviate these gas gradients. The focus of the project is on 3D microstructural analyses using advanced X-ray microtomography techniques to visualise pore formation during fruit development, and extending an existing multiscale mathematical model for oxygen transport to describe ethylene transport. The model will then be used to quantify oxygen and ethylene concentration profiles in the fruit and relate them to pore formation.

14. PHD IN PHYSICS AT KU LEUVEN ON “QUANTUM COLOR CENTERS IN DIAMOND: UNRAVELING THE LINK BETWEEN THE ATOMIC-SCALE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONALITY”
Summary of PhD Positions:
During the last two decades, point defects in diamond – also referred to as color centers– have arisen as excellent building blocks for a wide variety of solid state quantum devices and quantum technologies. Indeed, it has been shown that various defects can be introduced, which show bright single-photon emission at room temperature. So far, the negatively charged NV- defect, consisting of a single nitrogen impurity neighbored by a vacancy, has been the most widely studied candidate. Despite a number of particular advantages of the NV- center, the long fluorescent lifetime and a weak emission of theNV- into the zero-phonon line (ZPL) set an upper limit to the achievable photon rates of the quantum devices.

15. PH.D. POSITION ON ROBUSTNESS EVALUATION WITH DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS IN VACCINE DEVELOPMENT
Summary of PhD Positions:
Current state-of-the-art vaccine development is based on the “Quality-by-Design” paradigm, where risk-based and data driven decisions are key. One important aspect in this context is to establish the “Design space”. Design spaces are subspaces of process parameter combinations “that have been demonstrated to provide assurance of quality.” In that context, the robustness of a process is its property to generate quality attributes within specification limits after a change in experimental conditions. The robustness of a process is its property to tolerate changes in experimental conditions without negative impact on quality. The goal of the Ph.D. is to develop methodology geared towards identifying design spaces under the frequentist and Bayesian paradigms, to compare them, and to identify design of experiments strategies for finding design spaces efficiently. The project will be in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company GSK.

21. PHD ON TOPOLOGICAL AND ELECTRON CORRELATION PHENOMENA IN 2D/LAYERED MATERIALS
Summary of PhD Positions:
This project deals with phenomena originating from electron correlations and non-trivial band topology, which have become one of the main research areas in modern condensed matter physics. Many classes of materials have emerged including topological insulators, Dirac/Weyl semimetals and quantum anomalous Hall insulators (QAHI). Moreover, when such materials are combined, new phenomena and functionalities emerge, such as topological superconductivty and Majorana states. While major research efforts have been dedicated to studying such phenomena in conventional 3D materials, the tremendous potential of 2D or layered materials remains largely unexplored. Since new phenomena emerge from interface-mediated coupling (e.g. interfacing a QAHI and a superconductor), 2D materials and related layered systems are an ideal platform.

38. STUDYING POROUS METAL PHOSPHONATES VIA CRYSTALLINE AND MOLECULAR REFERENCE MATERIALS
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to study the synthesis and structure of porous metal phosphonates (PMPs). PMPs are a fascinating yet understudied class of hybrid materials. The exceptionally strong interaction of organophosphonate linkers to the metal nodes, especially for M(IV) centers (e.g., compared to M(IV)-carboxylates), yields robust materials that remain stable even under harsh conditions. The other side of the coin is that the strength of the M(IV)-O-P bond hampers synthesis control. Unlike for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the (partially) amorphous nature and diversity in chemical binding modes found in many PMPs challenge conventional analytical approaches.
