1. Fully Funded PhD Position in modelling of hydraulic fracturing
Summary of PhD Program:
This position is part of a joint project between the Geo-Energy Research Centre and the Composites Research Group and focuses on understanding the propagation of fracture due to applied fluid pressure. This PhD position will focus on the modelling of the fluid fracture interaction. The objective is to develop a coupled numerical model of dynamic fracture propagation in three dimension that accounts for the complex fluid-fracture interaction. This model will provide fundamental understanding on how fracture initiates, propagates, and arrests. The numerical results will be compared to experimental data from our collaborators at Harvard University and used to uncover the fundamental mechanisms governing hydraulic fracture.
Application Deadline: 05 July 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in modelling of dynamic fracture in 3D
Summary of PhD Program:
This position is part of a joint project between the Geo-Energy Research Centre and the Composites Research Group and focuses on understanding how fracture propagate in brittle materials such as rock, glass, ceramics, or concrete. This PhD position will focus on the modelling of the fracture in heterogeneous brittle materials. Most of our current understanding is based on two dimensional models and assume homogeneous material properties. However, real materials are three dimensional, mechanical properties vary spatially, and defects are present.

Therefore, innovations are constantly needed in sugar substitute’s solution to introduce sugar-reduced products without compromising its taste. It is well known that temperature interact perceived taste and flavour during consumption, for example, cold beverage taste less sweet than drinking at ambient temperature.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in The development of bacteriophage as bionanoparticles for gene therapy
Summary of PhD Program:
The study will be highly novel yet based on well-established engineering principles for bacteriophage. Conventional phage-display libraries present random peptides fused to a coat protein. The resulting PNPs display the peptide-fusion on the surface and carry packaged ssDNA coding for the peptide. This display system can be readily engineered to produce libraries with billions of peptide variants, each displaying a unique peptide and carrying the corresponding peptide gene. Panning of such libraries and subsequent Next Generation Sequencing/bioinformatics analysis of peptide genes that are within cell-associated PNPs can identify peptides with specificity for different cell types.

21. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning for predicting yeast phenotype from genotype for biotech applications
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will apply artificial intelligence approaches to address this challenge: given data on yeast genotypes, growth conditions and phenotypes (traits), can we develop predictive models for the phenotype of novel yeast strains and hence ultimately predict strains that could out-perform any of those in the training data. Such novel strains could be produced using synthetic biology approaches and the model predictions tested. Yeast is an ideal platform for the manufacture of biomedically important protein products, such as life-saving medicines. The diversity of yeast genotypes and protein products means that the best strain for optimal yield of a given product is typically unknown – but ripe for identification using novel AI methods.
