2. PhD Programs in plant colonised by microbes

Summary of PhD Positions:

Plant roots are responsible for nutrient and water uptake from the “outside” environment; the soil. This process is controlled by a specialized cell layer in the root, the endodermis. To keep the right concentration of nutrients in the plant, avoiding its leakage, this cell layer has evolved mechanisms of sealing, the blockage of the space between contiguous cells. One missing aspect in this sealing mechanism, critical for the organism survival, is the resident microbiota that is metabolically active and might disturb the cell layer sealing with consequences for nutrient and water balance.

4. PhD Programs in Precision Sprouting Technology

Summary of PhD Positions:

This exciting project will explain the role of sprouting and fermentation of grains and pulses on flavour traits, digestibility, nutritional quality and sustainability credentials. Sprouting and roasting of grains for bioactive development and improved digestibility is an approved food processing tool. However, there is no clear fundamental understanding of the mechanism behind this process. Therefore, there is an urgent need for precision tools to be developed that can explain the process and be used to target flavour development using a combination of natural and enhanced microbiomes for cereals (malt) and further to extend this technology to pulses.

5. PhD Programs in association between temperature and sweetness perception

Summary of PhD Positions:

Sweet snacks and dessert tend to give consumers a great pleasure and satisfaction, but often it also gives consumers a guilty emotion after consumption due to its high calorie content. The global sugar reduced/free sweet food market continue evolving due to increased number of health-conscious consumers, which does not only give consumers the indulgent sensation, but also offer a guilty-free emotion after eating. Therefore, innovations are constantly needed in sugar substitute’s solution to introduce sugar-reduced products without compromising its taste.

6. PhD Programs in Biosciences

Summary of PhD Positions:

A major cause contributing to the loss of agricultural production is the impact of pests and pathogens. Globally, pathogens destroy ~20% of wheat production even with improved pest and disease management measures. Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is the most economically important virus in UK cereals transmitted by various aphid species. In the case of severe infections, BYDV can cause losses of up to 60% in winter wheat. Other soil-borne Polymyxa graminis-transmitted viruses, such as Soilborne wheat mosaic virus (SBWMV), also threaten European wheat production.

7. PhD Programs in Lung Disease

Summary of PhD Positions:

The overall aim of our proposal is to bring together our recently developed hIPSC derived respiratory cells with a synthetic animal-free hydrogel to understand how the lungs respond to airborne particulate matter. Global incidence of respiratory disease has increased by 39% since 1990 and is responsible for 6% of all deaths globally. Inhalation studies are a major focus in respiratory research and include understanding the effect of inhaled chemicals, cigarette smoke, infectious particles, carcinogens, fibrotic agents, drug delivery systems and environmental particulate matter.

Cell-based models focus on lung epithelial cells to model the response to inhaled substances; however the whole organ response encompasses complex cell-to-cell interactions and signalling, immune cells and extracellular matrix modifications that currently only mouse models can fully replicate but provide poor translation to the human condition.

56. PhD Programs in Chromatin Regulator KAT6B

Summary of PhD Positions:

KAT6A and KAT6B are human genes encoding homologous multidomain proteins that regulate gene transcription in stem cells and during development. In addition to a lysine acetyltransferase domain, these chromatin regulators harbour domains that function as readers of histone modifications and in sequence-specific DNA binding (Dreveny et al., Nuc Acids Res 2014, 42:822-835). The project will study a novel domain in the KAT6B to determine its structure in complex with DNA.
