1. PhD Programs in Nanoparticle synthesis for drug delivery

Summary of PhD Positions:

The application of nanoparticles in the clinical field has increased in recent years, which also includes the manufacturing of engineered nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. For clinical applications, the properties of these nanoparticles need to be closely controlled during synthesis. For this purpose, microreaction technology is commonly applied. The research group has developed a wide range of ultrasound integrated flow reactors on the micro- and milli-scale. The aim of this project is to apply these reactors to emulsion-based synthesis of nanoparticles, which are then loaded with target molecules for drug delivery.

7. PhD Programs in Biomedical Sciences

Summary of PhD Positions:

The overarching aim of this research programme is to improve understanding of the drivers of antibiotic failures in the general population, to support the design of more targeted antimicrobial resistance prevention strategies. This will be done so in two steps. First, you will investigate antibiotic failures in a large population-based cohort and their variation over time and by sub-groups – to help understand how many individuals are affected, what their typical profile is and how this might have changed over time. Second, you will perform a thorough examination of possible patient- and practice-level factors that might play a role in the emergence of antibiotic failures – to help uncover possible reasons that could explain why treatments fail in some patients and not in others.

8. PhD Programs in Humanising cell- and animal models for synucleinopathy research

Summary of PhD Positions:

Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy belong to the family of synucleinopathies, which are neurodegenerative disorders characterised by the aggregation of alpha-synuclein protein with infectious properties. Although most studies have focused on the central nervous system, there is increasing evidence that these pathological proteins originate outside the brain, in the periphery. From visceral barrier sites they spread to the central nervous system via the nerves that innervate these organs. The origin of these diseases is unknown, but it is believed that a combination of genetic and environmental factors are involved.

16. PhD Programs in Optimal Pre-Processing for Sustainable Dissolution Based Recycling

Summary of PhD Positions:

The objective of this PhD is the development of an innovative recycling process configuration, combining mechanical and chemical treatment steps, for selected end-of-life plastic waste materials for reuse in smart food containers. The challenges for this are big as plastic packaging is responsible for around 60% of post-consumer waste in the EU26, with currently ~173 kg of plastic waste generated per inhabitant. Therefore, the recycling of packaging material with an increasing uptake of recycled content has gained significant interest.

Most recycling concepts for the end-of-life plastics are based on either (1) mechanical recycling necessitating closed loop collection systems to safeguard cleanliness and safety of the recycled material, or (2) pyrolysis to produce a bio-oil whereby the chemical identity of the initial polymers is lost, and the material is downcycled.

20. PhD Programs in Alzheimer research

Summary of PhD Positions:

Alzheimer’sdisease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder that leads to cognitive impairment and dementia. Despite minor progress in the treatment options, the current strategies do not allow to halt disease progression. One reason for the suboptimal outcome of clinical trials may be based on the fact that in AD, co-pathologies are thought to play a major role, impacting the generalized therapeutic options. One very frequent co-pathology in AD is the accumulation of TDP-43 protein aggregates in the neuronal cytoplasm. Accordingly, one can distinguish AD cases with and without TDP-43 co-pathology.

43. PhD Programs in PET/MR of cardiac noradrenergic innervation

Summary of PhD Positions:

Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supra nuclear palsy (PSP) and dementia with Lewy bodies are neurodegenerative brain disorders, but many of these patients also have significant impairment ofthe peripheral autonomic nervous system. It is currently suspected that both a’brain-first’ and a ‘body-first’ subtype may exist in zvP. In ‘body-first’ zvP, peripheral nerves would be affected first and the brain only secondarily.Besides central dopaminergic disturbances in the nigrostriatal pathway, changes in other mono aminergic systems, including the noradrenergic neurons, are also possible in these diseases. In zvP, abnormalities are sometimes seen very early on in cardiac innervation with sharp decreases in noradrenergic transporterexpression.

The overall goal of the BioConstuctionLab is to systematically explore, prototype, test and demonstrate the principal aesthetic, ecological and performing potentials of bio-fabrication for design and construction in context of regenerative architecture and circular bioeconomy. A particular focus is on building skins at the interface of macro- and microclimates and natural and urban ecosystems respectively. The Lab aims to synthesize a deep understanding of biofabrication with respect to materials, growth processes, digital fabrication, and engineering principles to develop a new bio-construction methodology. A design driven cross-discipline collaboration with (micro)biologists, material scientists, engineers and experts in digital fabrication is seen as a key enabler to achieve this.

49. PhD Programs in 3D Printed Structures

Summary of PhD Positions:

Structural failure in the aerospace, civil and energy sectors can be life threatening for users/passengers and financially catastrophic for operators and the manufacturer. This is the main reason for which critical structures (i.e. aircrafts, wind turbines etc.) spend large part of their life cycle under inspection with the accompanied costs being significant. On-line detection and characterization of minor failures within complex (composite as well as 3D printed) structures can lead to a radical reduction of this cost and eventually cheaper and safer transport and energy production.

50. PhD Programs in wind turbine & automotive gearboxes

Summary of PhD Positions:

The objective of this PhD trajectory is to develop, validate and exploit advanced numerical tools for the analysis of wind turbine and automotive gearboxes that are tailored towards the needs and requirements of Industry 4.0 and beyond. Applications of these numerical tools in Industry 4.0 include virtual prototyping of novel gearbox and drivetrain concepts and digital twin related activities such as virtual sensing / monitoring of difficult to measure gearbox characteristics . As a PhD researcher, you will use novel insights in the fields of physics-based modelling to develop and validate accurate and efficient gearbox analysis tools, starting from a library of computational tools available at the hosting research group.
