Summary of PhD Positions:
The application of nanoparticles in the clinical field has increased in recent years, which also includes the manufacturing of engineered nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. For clinical applications, the properties of these nanoparticles need to be closely controlled during synthesis. For this purpose, microreaction technology is commonly applied. The research group has developed a wide range of ultrasound integrated flow reactors on the micro- and milli-scale. The aim of this project is to apply these reactors to emulsion-based synthesis of nanoparticles, which are then loaded with target molecules for drug delivery.

Summary of PhD Positions:
Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is one of the best known additive manufacturing techniques for the production of thermoplastics based components. It is based on material extrusion and it is thermal energy driven. In the Advanced Manufacturing Lab(AML) of KU Leuven, campus de Nayer, code enabling to predict and simulate the build temperature of FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) printed parts has been developed. This code, which is named ‘Temperature for Fused Filament Fabrication’ (T4F3), has been successfully applied to predict critical reheating temperatures for high-quality and efficient printing of PLA (polylactic acid) parts and to develop the first examples of adaptive printing strategies in FFF.

This project aims to develop innovative processes for extraction of medical radioisotopes from irradiated target materials by solvent extraction in milliflow reactors. The objective of this PhD is the development of an innovative recycling process configuration, combining mechanical and chemical treatment steps, for selected end-of-life plastic waste materials for reuse in smart food containers. Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supra nuclear palsy (PSP) and dementia with Lewy bodies are neurodegenerative brain disorders, but many of these patients also have significant impairment ofthe peripheral autonomic nervous system. It is currently suspected that both a’brain-first’ and a ‘body-first’ subtype may exist in zvP. Nuclear fusion has the potential to provide the world’s energy needs with safe, sustainable and virtually limitless energy. The experimental reactor ITER, currently being built in France, is the key experimental step between today’s fusion research machines and tomorrow’s fusion power plants. In this context, startup of the reactor and wall conditioning will be carried out through Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) plasmas.
