1. PhD Programs in Immunology

Summary of PhD Positions:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease associated with chronic pain, functional disability, an overall reduced quality of life for the affected individual. Despite tremendous progress in the treatment of RA, a large portion of patients still don’t respond to the current therapies and thereby fail to achieve disease remission. Therefore, there is still a great need for new therapeutic agents that can help bring more patients into disease remission. The pathogenesis of RA depends on a complex interplay between the immune system and a group of local joint stromal cells, called fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS).

2. PhD Programs in Cell-to-cell communication via exosomes

Summary of PhD Positions:

The goal of this project is to understand how cells transmit RNA-molecules to each other via exosomes, and how to utilize this process for therapeutic purposes. Specifically, we aim to (i) elucidate the cellular mechanism by which a group of cytosolic RNA molecules are sorted into exosomes, (ii) define how mRNAs from early endosomes are translocated into exosomes (insertion of therapeutic mRNA into exosomes), and (iii) explore the potential use of theses exosomes for in vivo mRNA-delivery in animal models.

3. PhD Programs in Neurochemistry of neuroinflammation in Alzheimer

Summary of PhD Positions:

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been defined as a pathophysiological process characterized by the progressive accumulation of protein aggregates (amyloid and tau) that ultimately lead to neuronal injury. Throughout this pathophysiological process, an intricate and complex metabolic network becomes altered, affecting different biological pathways that lead to the syndromic onset observed in AD patients. Inflammatory cascades have been reported multiple times to be altered in AD and is considered by many as one of the key players driving disease progression. Thus, there is no doubt regarding the relevance of the immune response to AD pathology progression.

6. PhD Programs in Post-stroke neurodegeneration

Summary of PhD Positions:

Our goal is to enhance recovery after stroke. Stroke affects about 12 million people worldwide annually. Of the approximately 6 million survivors, about 50% suffer from long-lasting or permanent disability. No efficient therapy is currently available, except for the removal of the occluding blood clot during the first hours after ischemic stroke. Loss of function after stroke is due to cell death in the infarcted tissue, cell dysfunction in the peri-infarct region, as well as dysfunction and neurodegeneration in remote brain areas. Plasticity responses in spared brain regions are a major contributor to functional recovery, while secondary neurodegeneration in remote regions is associated with depression and impedes the long-term outcome after stroke.

8. PhD Programs in Serotonin modulation following maternal infection

Summary of PhD Positions:

Maternal inflammation leading to preterm birth is associated with innate immune activation through toll-like receptors (TLR). Inflammation has emerged as a common driving force in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). Maternal immune activation increases placental tryptophan metabolism, which leads to increased serotonin (5HT) levels in the fetal brain, which causes loss of 5HT negative feedback mechanisms and altered brain development in the long-term. The overall purpose of the doctoral project is to investigate the effect of streptococcus-induced maternal infection on the serotonergic pathway in the offspring in connection with autism later in life and provide a neuroprotective potential treatment strategy.
