Summary of PhD Positions:

One line of research in this program is concerned with the formalization of the name binding rules in programming languages. To that end, the group has developed a theory of name resolution based on scope graphs, and applied it in the design and implementation of a meta-language for static semantics. In dynamic semantics, scope graphs provide a uniform model for memory at runtime and serve as the basis for intrinsically-typed definitional interpreters, enabling the automatic verification of type soundness.

We are seeking two PhD Students to join the Spoofax team to (1) extend the theory and application of scope graphs to the specification of programmable software restructurings, (2) develop analogs to scope graphs for capturing and transforming control flow, (3) develop a software restructuring framework for the C++ programming language based on this framework, and (4) validate the restructuring infrastructure through restructuring production C++ code at Philips Healthcare.

3. PhD Programs in Maintenance-Aware Multi-Level Control for Ammonia-Powered Ships

Summary of PhD Positions:

This PhD project focuses on integrated control strategy and maintenance policy design to assure reliable operation and high availability of ships powered by ammonia (NH3). Ammonia is one of the most promising hydrogen carriers and clean, alternative fuels for long-distance shipping and other maritime, or heavy-duty, applications. When produced from renewable power, ammonia could decarbonize shipping and thus help to achieve the goals of the Paris agreement to combat climate change.

In this PhD project, you will start from an innovative ammonia-fuelled power and propulsion system concept for ships utilising a combination of state-of-the-art Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) technology, i.e., the AmmoniaDrive concept. To meet the national climate target and reduce the global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 2050, the Dutch steel industry has committed to make CO2-neutral steel by using hydrogen and also make the production process more sustainable by maximising the recycling of steel scrap. Copper can enter into the steel melt from scrap, and is a detrimental element unwanted in most steel grades, that can only be tolerated at very low concentrations.

Due to the increasing demand for circularity and climate change mitigation, the amount of recycled scrap in steel production is expected to increase in coming years. Consequently, more copper, which is present in the scrap with increasing amounts, will enter to the steel. Currently, copper cannot be removed from steel by oxidation refining once it is dissolved in liquid steel. This leads to a critical limitation of increasing the scrap input in steelmaking, hampering its circularity.

Composite Pressure Vessels (CPV) are well suited for hydrogen storage of next-generation sustainable aircraft. In this project, we will look at the filament-wound composite shell of the CPV. The project will focus on the tailoring of thermo-mechanical properties of a hydrogen storage tank for cryogenic working conditions using variable stiffness filament winding architectures.

The novelty of the research will be the tailoring of thermo-elastic response of filament-wound composite structures to optimize the gravimetric efficiency of CPVs for hydrogen storage. This requires the prediction of the stress state and failure of the laminate factoring in residual stresses of the manufacturing process and thermal stresses under cryogenic (working) conditions, which need specifically developed analysis tools.

Thermal stresses and different failure phenomena including failure of the vessel under cryogenic conditions will be considered in the model. Physics-based modelling approaches are being chosen in a finite element analysis framework. After validating the thermal stresses and resulting displacements for a flat plate, the complete composite pressure vessel will be modelled. The developed analysis method will be used to tailor the thermo- mechanical response of the laminate to alleviate the thermal stresses and strains.

For the research project ‘Circulation, mixing and transport in the southern North Sea and the influence of large scale sand extraction’, the section of Environmental Fluid Mechanics at Delft University of Technology is looking for a candidate with a strong background in physical oceanography/ environmental fluid dynamics and/or 3D hydrodynamic modelling, or a physicist, mathematician or engineer, strongly motivated to study flow and transport in a coastal sea.

In this project, you will investigate the physical oceanography of the southern North Sea, with a particular focus on the Rhine River Plume, one of the largest river plumes in Europe. Coastal processes such as tidal straining, river plume dynamics, upwelling and downwelling and sub-mesoscale processes determine the circulation, mixing and transport of fine sediments, tracers and larvae in coastal and shelf seas.

You will study how these phenomena will be affected by bathymetric changes related to large scale sand extraction, both now and under predicted climate change. You will also explore how these effects influence the transport of fish larvae across the southern North Sea and into the deltas.

Signs of hydration are present on the surface of most planetary and airless small bodies of the Solar System. The study of such features is of interest for the search for the origins of life in the Solar System as water is one of the building blocks. On airless planetary bodies, the water can be found either solid as water ice or as hydrated minerals resulting from an ancient flow of liquid water on the surface.

Hydration can be detected through infrared spectroscopic observations of the planetary body, each state of water leaving a characteristic feature in the resulting spectrum. Investigations of these hydration signs through high-resolution spectroscopy could bring information on the composition and structure of the observed surface, from which the formation mechanism and alteration history of the body can be derived.

Planets form in discs of gas and solids around young stars. Initially, these solids are tiny dust specks, smaller than 1 micron. In order to form a planet like Earth, or the core of a giant like Jupiter, these dust specks need to come together to form much bigger bodies. Hydrogen is projected to be a major energy carrier in the future. One of its projected uses is to power aircraft. Unfortunately, the use of hydrogen comes with a safety hazard as mixtures of hydrogen and air are, under certain conditions, flammable or even explosive. On top of that, even a tiny leakage of hydrogen, being a severe greenhouse gas, can contribute significantly to global warming. While hydrogen sensors exists nowadays, these sensors are not suited for all applications.

Optical hydrogen sensors feature distinct advantages with respect to present-day technology. They can be made small, cheap and are intrinsically safe. The heart of these sensors is a metal hydride sensing layer providing the optical signal. Upon exposure to hydrogen, the metal hydride will absorb hydrogen, which changes it’s optical properties. By measuring e.g. the reflectivity of the light, the hydrogen concentration can then be determined.

Summary of PhD Positions:

Ongoing long-term changes in ocean tides may have severe consequences for coastal environments and ecological systems. Our understanding of these changes has so far only been based on the analysis of clustered and sparsely distributed coastal tide gauge records and some model-based studies. This PhD project aims to boost our understanding by i) mapping the long-term global changes in ocean tides from multi-mission, coastal-waters-inclusive satellite radar altimeter data; and ii) quantifying the contributions of four driving processes to the observed changes.

Moreover, we will assess the impact of long-term global changes in ocean tides on the intertidal Wadden Sea. To achieve these objectives, sophisticated data processing schemes and analysis techniques will be developed and exploited. Moreover, besides observations, hydrodynamic models will be used to assess the contribution of driving processes to the observed changes, as well as to estimate the changes in the Wadden Sea and their effect on the net exchange of sediment with the North Sea.

Summary of PhD Positions:

Living cells are highly complex systems made of countless lifeless molecular components. We do not understand how these interact to form a living cell that sustains itself, grows and divides. The BaSyC initiative is a collaborative 10-year research program that aims to understand ‘how life works’ by building an autonomous self-reproducing synthetic cell from the bottom up. As a container, we use giant unilamellar vesicles, which are cell-sized, lipid bilayer-enclosed reaction compartments that can be visualized by real-time microscopy and directly manipulated using biophysical tools.

The Koenderink and Dekker labs study the process of cell division, which requires constriction of the cell into a dumbbell-shape, followed by neck abscission to split the cell into two daughter cells. Since the mechanism of abscission is still poorly understood, it remains a big challenge in the synthetic cell field to achieve robust cell division.

In a breakthrough experiment, we recently discovered that phase transition in magnetic membranes can be probed by purely nanomechanical means. Currently, the field of 2D magnets is exploding in many directions; the Delft group is wold-leading in the nanomechanical studies of them. We are seeking two highly skilled and motivated experimental physicists to work on studying the membrane dynamics of ferromagnetic (one position) and antiferromagnetic (second position) materials. The work comprises the fabrication of devices (in the state-of-the cleanroom of the Kavli Nanolaboratory and exfoliation techniques), the measurement of the dynamic mechanical properties of the membranes at varying temperature (resonant frequency and damping) and the interpretation/modelling of the results.
