6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Software Engineering and Software Sustainability

Summary of PhD Program:

A sustainable software system could be defined as energy-efficient with a minimum environmental impact and a positive impact on social and/or economic sustainability. Sustainability of software systems is an important challenge for the IT community as more and more people are adopting software solutions in different fields, and with the advances in ICT their use will keep increasing. This increase in software systems use comes at a cost to the environment.

A key challenge in the design of sustainable software systems is to provide users with high-quality software products without compromising their energy-efficiency. Thus, the main focus of this thesis project is to identify novel approaches to software system design that provide an acceptable trade-off between software sustainability and quality-in-use (i.e., quality perceived by end-users). The project is therefore necessarily multidisciplinary, and the successful applicant will be working on more than one branch of knowledge. The outcome of the project will bridge the gap between software engineering, human-computer interaction, and software sustainability.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Real Time Simulation

Summary of PhD Program:

Governmental policies have been developed in several countries aiming to decarbonize the power generation and the transport sector. Most of the Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), including generation, batteries and electric vehicle charging are connected to the electricity grid through power electronics.

The main idea of this project is to use dynamic simulation to investigate the impact on the power grid caused by Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) – such as Electric Vehicles, and suggest control techniques to minimise the problems, which can be verified and validated by using real time simulation/control in the loop simulation. The simulation seeks to reproduce the user’s consumption profile, stipulating an analysis of the results considering a massive insertion of electric vehicles in the electrical grid (at medium and low voltage levels).

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational linguistics

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of DigPhil is to create a strong and state-of-the-art doctoral research environment in early languages (up to and including the eighteenth century), educating modern philologists who are well aware of the disciplinary traditions but also have solid competence in computational linguistics. The research school broadly defines philology as the integrated study of languages and texts in their historical contexts.

Philology continues a tradition founded in the Library of Alexandria in the third century BCE and consists in a dynamic and cross-disciplinary interaction between textual criticism and book history, historical linguistics, various forms of textual analysis (metrics, rhetoric, narratology etc.) and hermeneutics.

Digital methods and tools can be developed and applied in all of these areas, e.g. using AI to restore fragmentary texts, making use of computational approaches in comparative historical linguistics, performing automized stylometry or narrative analysis, or reading and extracting facts from texts with data-mining methods.

23. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cancer Systems Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Unlike many fatal forms of cancer, the brain tumor glioblastoma causes death not by distant metastasis but by local invasion. The local invasive growth of glioblastomas is multi-faceted: tumor cells invade along multiple anatomical routes, including the perivascular spaces, white matter fibers, and directly through brain parenchyma. Studies from our lab and others have linked these invasion routes to cellular pathways; the emerging picture is that invading glioblastoma cells appear to co-opt numerous pathways from embryo development and wound healing, including mesenchymal transformation and differentiation along oligodendrocyte and astrocyte lineages. Looking ahead, a central question is to what degree these mechanisms can be exploited for therapy.
