3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Genetic analysis of recombination events and their contribution to genetic variance

Summary of PhD Program:

Individuals differ in the number of crossovers that they transmit to their offspring, and the crossover count is at least partly heritable. It is well known that crossovers contribute to genetic variation that is exploited in selection in species that reproduce sexually. This contribution is, however, not yet quantified. The CrossOver project aims to empirically quantify this contribution based on data from pigs. In order to do this, models will be developed and validated within the project.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding pan-fungicide resistance in the airborne human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus

Summary of PhD Program:

Aspergillus fumigatus is a human pathogenic fungus causing serious life-threatening diseases. Antifungal resistance against the azole class is rapidly spreading on a global scale and hampering effective treatment of patients. A. fumigatus isolates from patients have not only acquired azole resistance but also resistance to other agricultural fungicides. Recent analysis shows that multiple genes are involved in this pan-fungicide resistance, and these variants may have unforeseen impact on various aspects of the biology of this fungus.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating Greenhouse gas balance of fen meadow landscapes

Summary of PhD Program:

WSG has built up a considerable track record in studying interactions between greenhouse gas exchange, hydrology, land use, and climate (change). WSG contribute to this peatland research with (mobile) tower based eddy covariance measurements of greenhouse gas exchange at field scale and with airborne measurements using the same technique at regional scale. In past 3 years we have built a strong measurement programme that include 20+ operational sites and almost weekly survey flights.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evolution of plant adaptation to selenium hyperaccumulation

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research aims at understanding the molecular and physiological mechanisms of selenium hyperaccumulation. In our research, we use the Australian legume Neptunia amplexicaulis, which is one of the strongest selenium hyperaccumulators known globally. The research programme to which the PhD position contributes, aims to develop a mechanistic understanding of selenium hyperaccumulation through resolving the ecology, physiology, and molecular biology of the selenium metabolism in Neptunia amplexicaulis. You will use advanced molecular genetic tools to identify relevant genes and processes that contribute to the extraordinary capacity of Neptunia amplexicaulis to hyperaccumulate selenium.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in developing adaptation pathways towards a climate-resilient and prosperous Southwest Delta

Summary of PhD Program:

WUR is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to work on this collaborative research programme. As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to work package 5: Social welfare in future delta plans. You will contribute to developing a Social Welfare Framework of the project by including include various societal interests including flood risk management, freshwater availability and salinization reduction, healthy ecosystems, economic opportunities and a safe and healthy living environment. This involves interacting with other work packages to obtain information on time horizon for land use change and economic costs, changes in water quality and ecological quality etc.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Reverse Stress testing

Summary of PhD Program:

The Operations Research and Logistics group of Wageningen University is hiring a PhD candidate (4 years, full-time employment) to support the development of a new methodology for managing supply chain risks based on stress testing methods. So far, the management of risks in supply chains has mainly relied on the identification and classification of supply chain risks based on impact and probability of occurrence. Unfortunately, it turns out that often risks are very difficult to predict and that one may need to analyze many (often irrelevant) scenarios.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in urban greening and health

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will focus on the study of the relationships between objective health data and green area availability where people live, and on the health benefits that can be expected by greening residential neighbourhoods, to identify what type of nature reduces stress best in real-life settings. The goals of the project are to study the extent to which socioeconomic health disparities may be reduced by making optimal use of the stress-reducing qualities of contact with nature, and to study which types of nature are most effective in this regard for people with a low socioeconomic status.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in machine learning-based prediction of protein-protein interactions

Summary of PhD Program:

Biological processes are controlled by transcription factor proteins (TFs), which interact in many different combinations to regulate gene expression. However, it is still largely unclear how the specificity of protein-protein interactions is encoded in protein sequence and structure and how this determines which combinations of proteins with unique functions can be formed. Ultimately, this knowledge is important to steer and control biological processes, and investigate for example the cause of human diseases or govern modern plant breeding approaches.
