8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data-driven decision-support methods to balance electricity systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The proposed research in this PhD project builds on an existing collaboration with the National Grid ESO’s Electricity National Control Centre (ENCC) where a decision-support tool is collaboratively developed to enable ENCC to use a very large number of units to balance electricity demand and generation in real-time operation of the system. The decision-support tool is based on a mathematical programming model where various constraints of dispatch electricity generators to meet demand are expressed mathematically. While the tool provides theoretical guarantees of converging to an optimal solution, the computational times to reach a solution may be very large.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ultra-intense laser-plasma interactions

Summary of PhD Program:

Rapid developments in high power laser technology have enabled new regimes in laser intensity to be reached, which has opened up new frontiers in science via the production of extreme pressures, temperatures and intense electric and magnetic fields. With the advent of multi-petawatt-class lasers on the horizon, e.g. via the European extreme light infrastructure (ELI) project, unprecedented intensities will soon be achievable, giving rise to a new high-field physics phenomena in which large fractions of the laser energy is absorbed into gamma-rays and subsequently electron-positron pair creation.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigation of Suction Caisson Behaviour under Pressure Cycling

Summary of PhD Program:

Suction caissons are a type of foundation commonly used to support offshore wind turbines in deep waters. They are installed by pumping water out of the caisson to create a ‘suction pressure’ (i.e. negative pressure relative to the ambient pressure) inside. Pressure cycling, which involves the cycling of the suction pressure, is often used to continue caisson penetration into the seabed when constant suction pressure is not effective. However, there is currently no method for predicting caisson penetration under pressure cycling, which can lead to significant uncertainty. There is also a critical lack of understanding of the potential effects of pressure cycling on the subsequent in-service performance of the caisson.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in In-Process Inspection of Nuclear Components

Summary of PhD Program:

Traditionally, welding and inspection of high-integrity joints are separate, sequential, often manual processes in manufacturing and repair. Ultimately, these limitations reduce productivity, throughput, schedule certainty and increase rework if defects are detected at weld completion. As welding is a dynamic volumetric process, fusing joints of depth and width, this project seeks to exploit the volumetric imaging capability of ultrasonics, and introduce this inspection modality directly into the welding process control loop. By investigating robotic in-process ultrasonic inspection and control, this project aims to deliver high-integrity welds right, first time, every time and overcome current technical and process limitations.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Dry Carbon Fibre

Summary of PhD Program:

Currently, dry fiber inspection research/technology using EC is very limited and seldom commercialized in the industry as the potential has not been extensively explored.
