1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Simulation thinking

Summary of PhD Program:

Simulation plays a critical role in evidence-based operational to strategic decision-making levels in any organisation. Best practice for simulation generally includes establishing good data quantity and quality, and model verification and validation, however, some aspects of simulation process are less tangible such as asking the right questions, making the right assumptions and communicating complex information to the wider stakeholders. Some of these aspects may be considered tacit knowledge or skills developed through experience and there is currently no universal architecture or a holistic framework for simulation engineers to follow (or trained in).

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aerodynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

A combination of experimental and computational techniques will be used throughout this project to develop an understanding of the flow field and influencing factors around athletes and wheelchairs during racing. The project will investigate how aerodynamics and ultimately, drag varies with changing body position and whilst following other athletes.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in obesity

Summary of PhD Program:

Obesity is a major public health problem, in part because individuals with obesity often develop multiple-long term conditions (MLTCs). There is, however, considerable heterogeneity between individuals. While one person with obesity might develop a specific set of diseases or conditions (e.g., diabetes and hypertension), another person who also has obesity might not.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Thermofluid interactions for next generation emission control

Summary of PhD Program:

The purpose of this research project is to experimentally investigate the breakup of the SCR spray during impaction, and the accompanying heat transfer, using state-of-the-art laser-based techniques. With this understanding in place, the research will investigate ways to optimise the interactions under different temperature and flow rate conditions. This research is supported by a major international company operating in the off-road heavy-duty sector.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Route to terahertz 4-dimensional microscopy

Summary of PhD Program:

We aim to use Terahertz radiation combined with ultrafast Photonics to push the boundary of what we can see in the microscopic world, sharply beyond what it currently achievable. This goal requires a foundational study and a typical high-risk high-gain research approach, with dense fundamental and applied research outputs and novel intellectual properties of industrial interest.

Application Deadline: 7th July 2023

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Reinforcement learning for manipulating the electromagnetic environment in defence scenarios

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our Electromagnetic Environment (EME) Hub as a PhD researcher. The project will focus on developing reinforcement learning techniques to control the transmit chain to achieve desired effects in a dynamic and contested defence scenario, for example, to degrade an adversary’s wireless communications capability.

Application Deadline: 12 July 2023

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling and validation of multi-dimensional terahertz nonlinear ghost imaging

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exercise as anti-inflammatory therapy for patients with axial spondyloarthritis

Summary of PhD Program:

In collaboration with colleagues at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, this PhD project will build on recently completed pilot work with patients with axSpA, using our internationally recognised expertise in the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise. The project will explore which and how exercise can act as an anti-inflammatory treatment in this debilitating condition, using techniques such as immune phenotyping and flow cytometry, while also assessing patients’ symptom burden and their quality of life using quantitative and qualitative methodology. We will provide training in all of these techniques.

Application Deadline: 16 July 2023

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Enhancing the fit, comfort, and safety of generation-after-next body armour

Summary of PhD Program:

Military and security personnel encounter an array of potentially life-threatening dangers, with body armour pivotal in protecting these individuals by reducing the possibility of sustaining life-threatening injuries. This research seeks to utilise prominent digital design and manufacturing technologies (such as 3D scanning, 3D printing, additive manufacture, etc.) to enhance the user-centred design practices of body armour and equipment manufacturers, with a view to maximise the physical performance of the future defence and security workforce.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Design for X’ knowledge framework

Summary of PhD Program:

The ultimate aim of this research is to help engineering designers to maximise the benefits and opportunities of advanced manufacturing systems, through the design of a flexible system or framework of design guidelines. This project will focus on understanding the requirements; the expected output is a validated proposal for the structure and format of design information, its capture, and its utilisation.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in System Optimisation using Aerodynamic Inserts

Summary of PhD Program:

In order to reduce our impact on the environment including emissions and energy consumption, the efficiency of aerodynamic and fluid systems must be maximised. However, components often see sub-optimal input – or boundary – conditions which can impact their efficiency, effectiveness and lifespan. This project will use initially use fundamental, canonical flows to develop a methodology for designing desired flow structures or removal of flow structures. The researcher will then work together with the project sponsor to apply the methodology to a number of industrial flow systems, in order to improve component and system efficiency.
