Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This position is part of a broad project to explore and model the connections between landscape evolution and biological speciation and diversification over geological timescales. Collaborators within the Department of Environmental Sciences will also be involved in the project. The fundamental question to be addressed is how tectonics affect physical geography or other landscape factors defining habitat and how the change in those parameters over space and time impacts speciation, species dispersal and biodiversity. Your task will be to develop and test numerical models based on existing landscape evolution models and will collaborate on applications. Model applications will include a range of tectonic and geomorphic scenarios and the implementation of biological dispersal models for both aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This position is part of the SNSF-funded project “TropSEDs (Tropical Soil Erosion Dynamics): Unraveling the roles of climate and land-use on the erosional transfer of carbon from source to sink through time in the Kasaï Basin” which began in March 2022. The project aims to resolve the controls on—and predict future changes in—the movement and fate of tropical soil carbon in the Kasaï Basin, DR Congo. Specifically, we have sampled and will continue to sample sediments in rivers, floodplains, ancient lake bottoms, and soils along the Kasaï River. We will assess the amount, age, and source of organic carbon and how this relates to geologic factors such as clay sediment type or environmental factors like land use and climate, both today and over the past ~6,000 years.

Arrays of individual atoms trapped in optical tweezers are promising for quantum simulation and quantum information processing. The new apparatus in our group combines arrays of individual atoms and arrays of small atomic ensembles, with the individual atoms for encoding qubits/spins and atomic ensembles for ancillary operations. This project is devoted to implementing new schemes for scalable local qubit operations, fast and non-demolish measurements, and a significant higher experimental repetition rate. These developed schemes enable the study of out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics, quantum information processing protocols with mid-circuit measurement and feedback, and eventually quantum error correction.

The 3D Sketch Maps project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation in the scope of the Sinergia funding program, investigates 3D sketch maps from a theoretical, empirical, cognitive, as well as tool-related perspective, with a particular focus on Extended Reality (XR) technologies. Sketch mapping is an established research method in fields that study human spatial decision-making and information processing, such as navigation and wayfinding. For many domains though, such as aviation or the cognition of complex multilevel buildings, it is essential to study people’s 3D understanding of space, which is not possible with the current 2D methods.

6. Postdoctoral Position 

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

A growing team led by Andreas Wallraff together with a team of senior researchers from the Quantum Device Lab at the Department of Physics of ETH has set up a new superconducting circuits lab on the PSI campus at Villigen in the canton of Aargau. At this site we scale up systems developed at the Quantum Device Lab to 100 qubits and beyond. We develop automated testing and characterization techniques suitable for such large-scale devices and for systematic optimization of the fabrication processes. We also explore applications of noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices and plan to offer collaborators from academia and industry opportunities to benchmark their own hardware and algorithms in a state-of-the-art superconducting quantum system.
