3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical Statistics

Summary of PhD Program:

What are the effects of climate change on the diversity of land birds? How many fur seals remain in Antarctica after breeding season? Do flies transmit the ‘bee’ parasite on flowers during defecation? Statistics is there to answer these big-scale and small-scale questions and to understand the world around us, each other and ourselves. When analyzing the relationships between a response and predictors, it might be natural to assume that some relationships obey certain shape constraints, such as monotonicity and convexity.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Applied Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The Applied Optics group at Umeå University is looking for an outstanding PhD candidate interested in developing mid-infrared photothermal microscopy for fast chemical imaging of fatty acids in living cells. Fatty acids are a group of lipids with important cellular functions, including energy production, energy storage and signalling, to control cell proliferation and metabolism. Inside cells, fatty acids can form lipid droplets, whose size, number and dynamics are related to the cell state. Uptake and metabolism of fatty acids occur fast and are tightly regulated in healthy cells. If deregulated, lipid signalling contributes to inflammation, cancer and metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The ‘Space Plasma Physics’ group at Umeå University is looking for a brilliant PhD candidate interested in performing research on magnetosphere-interior coupling at planet Mercury using numerical simulations. The PhD project is primarily based on computer simulations and the student is supposed to combine data analysis from a kinetic plasma model with the analysis of data collected by NASA’s MESSENGER and ESA/JAXA BepiColmbo spacecraft. Mercury is a fundamentally unique object in the solar system. It possesses a weak global magnetic field internal origin, and in consequence, a small magnetosphere much smaller than the magnetosphere of Earth. Due to the proximity of Mercury to the Sun, the magnetosphere of Mercury is subject to the most intense solar wind flux and ferocious space weather among all the planets in the solar system.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The ‘Space Plasma Physics’ group at Umeå University is looking for a brilliant PhD candidate interested in performing research on 3D magnetosheath jet properties. The PhD project combines the analysis of data from state-of-the art plasma simulations with the analysis of data from state-of-the art satellites orbiting Earth. The supersonic solar wind blows through the solar system. Earth is partly protected by the bow shock, but fast plasma flows can still penetrate the magnetosheath. Such magnetosheath jets (dynamic pressure enhancements) can impact the magnetopause and cause geoeffective disturbances due to their excess energy and momentum. However, it is not known how strong such space weather disturbances can be and if they may be harmful. To fill in the gap, in the PhD project we will determine for example the impact rates of jets, and how much energy and momentum the jets transfer.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in industrial design

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD student will join a vibrant educational environment, characterised by combinations of collaborative and individual research and a supervisory team supporting them throughout the program. In many human cultures, people use their hands to prepare food, knead dough, wipe the bowl, lick their fingers, pass ingredients, and otherwise share and consume food. This embodied engagement with the materiality of food not only nourishes our bodies, but it nurtures and transmits culture(s) and shapes who we are. It also adds taste and entangles people’s microbiomes. Such cultural practices are rich and have been part of human identity since time immemorial. However, their impact on what it might mean to be human in a time of climate instability and loss, and the great work of societal transition that stands before us, remains under explored.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in industrial design

Summary of PhD Program:

Under the focus area of “sustainability and grassroots communities”, there are a number of emerging concerns for industrial design. In a digitalising society, networked and computational technologies are altering the ways things are made and shared, even becoming new infrastructures for design. Changes in patterns of production and consumption indicate new ways people are engaging in design and technology development, from distributed manufacturing to peer-to-peer production, extending also to platform co-ops and experiments in postcapitalist organising. In such industrial transitions, there is potential for exploring what inclusive, “just” and environmentally sustainable practices and lifeways can look like, practices that acknowledge human embeddedness in webs of life.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to investigate and develop a serverless edge AI (SEAI) framework where edge AI utilises serverless computing to address key challenges including learning and inference ability on the edge for smart workload relocation and orchestration, mobility of FaaS applications, and prediction of energy consumption and workloads across the continuum. By developing an efficient framework and associated algorithms (e.g., continual learning, sequence modelling, multi-objective optimization), the project will improve performance of learning and decision making for optimizing and managing resources on serverless edge nodes in comparison to traditional centralized cloud approaches. The framework and algorithms will be validated through a real-time testbed and simulation environment to solve key challenges.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in computational science

Summary of PhD Program:

The evolution of multicellular organisms has fundamentally shaped the biosphere by giving rise to complex forms of life that can operate across tremendous scales. Yet, not all forms of multicellularity are the same: some have hundreds of types of cells arranged in intricate body plans, while others are simple balls of undifferentiated cells. Though there may not be a single feature explaining such differences in complexity, one striking candidate is the presence/absence of a developmental program. Developmental programs connect the function of cells or the expression of phenotypes to information and thus enable the construction of elaborate structures from a single template.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

The deoxygenation of coastal systems and estuaries has strong implications for ecosystem function by reducing suitable zones for fish nurseries and causing shifts in global carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes. While the oxygen inventory of the global ocean has declined by 2.7 % since 1960, an additional decline of up to 7 % has been projected to the end of 21st century. The aim of this project is to study the consequences of coastal deoxygenation on microbial processes and related ecosystem services. We will study how deoxygenation impacts the contribution of coastal systems to biogeochemical cycles, with a focus on anaerobic respiration and anaerobic photosynthesis including how this enhances contamination of food webs by neurotoxic methylmercury via mercury methylation.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in medical science

Summary of PhD Program:

Transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis is a rare disease caused by misfolding of TTR which in turn forms amyloid fibrils that are deposited in various tissues and organs of the body. There are two different forms of TTR amyloidosis, one genetic (ATTRv) and one acquired (wild type, ATTRwt). The genetic form is autosomal dominant inheritance and arises as a result of mutations in the TTR gene. The wild-type form occurs when normal TTR protein forms amyloid fibrils (the mechanism is unknown) and accumulates in particular the heart. The molecular mechanism of TTR amyloidosis is not fully understood but involves several mechanisms such as structural changes in the TTR protein due to mutations or aging.
