1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Wood and Bionanocomposites

Summary of PhD Program:

Spun filaments based on cellulose nanofibers are interesting for sustainable composites. These filaments have a unique microtape shape which is expected to be advantageous compared to traditional circular fibers. The aim of the project is to study how the spun filaments can function as structural reinforcement for polymers, and to understand how the unique structure of the nanofibres at different moisture levels and environments affects the mechanical properties.

This is achieved by experimental studies with world-leading characterization techniques, such as in-situ (in-operando) WAXS and X-ray tomography at MAX IV, combined with modeling. As a PRISMAS PhD student, you will be supervised by a beamline researcher at MAX IV, giving you access to cutting-edge synchrotron technologies and instrumentation. You will spend three to twelve months at MAX IV and collaborate with our industrial partner Spinnova OY, Finland.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Elements

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of this project is to understand the wear mechanism of polymeric based material at macroscale, with support of polymer physical behavior at nano and micro-scale. Opening a new era in tribology: In this project, we will develop a new rheometer – tribometer setup combined with small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, which we will refer to as Rheo-Tribo-SWAXS, at ForMAX. This research project aim is to address the fundamental mechanisms behind “abrasive and adhesive” polymer wears.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electric power engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Your project is part of a group of externally-funded projects where several PhD students and senior researchers will be working together towards assessing smart-grid solutions for transmission grids. An important driver throughout these projects is being able to quantify the opportunities and limitations of flexibility solutions in a transparent way and being able to communicate these to the various stakeholders. The hosting capacity method, which has been developed for distribution networks, will be developed further, and applied to transmission networks. Your project is also part of the Center for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden (CH2ESS), a research and knowledge initiative at LTU, in close collaboration with Swedish industry.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical Power Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The project concerning increased flexibility with optimized control of energy resources in local energy systems is carried out within the framework of the Arctic Center of Energy, whose purpose is to promote a sustainable transition in northern Sweden. The project takes place in close collaboration between researchers in different disciplines and the doctoral student is expected to collaborate primarily with a parallel project within the subject of Energy Engineering. The main financier for the project is the Swedish Energy Agency.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fluid Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD student for a project on increasing optimized storage of renewable energy, electricity, in regulated rivers. The work is carried out as part of the European research and innovation program Horizon Europe, which aims to promote a sustainable transition in Europe. The project takes place in close cooperation between researchers and industry from several European countries. The project aims to investigate how pumped-storage hydropower can be used to increase the flexibility of electricity storage in regulated rivers. The main focus is how new technology developments and operating schemes will affect the hydraulic environment, the influence on biodiversity as well as social acceptance.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Solid Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

In this PhD-student project we will investigate the hot-rolling process in the new generation of steel mills. The new production lines result a more energy efficient rolling process and it is of utmost importance to guarantee that the mechanical properties of the manufactured steel remain the same. To do this, we will develop a thermomechanical simulation method to simulate the new production process from continuous casting to the final steel product.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Elements – Electric vehicle (EV) tribology

Summary of PhD Program:

The transition from internal combustion engine driven trucks to trucks driven by electric motors has led to new demands for vehicle manufacturers, independent on whether the energy comes from batteries or fuel cells. One of the biggest and most critical problems in electric powertrains is parasitic stray currents. Parasitic stray currents originate from the battery DC to AC voltage conversion and propagate through the powertrains bearings and gears risking electrical discharges depending on the tribological situation. With time the discharges lead to damages to the bearing raceways and gear surfaces which in turn leads to noise and drastically reduced service life. The main goal of the project is to establish fundamental knowledge about electrified tribological contacts so that bearing currents and its damages can be eliminated.
