1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Alzheimer’s disease

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral student will participate on a project focused on exploring the molecular mechanisms responsible for the early degeneration of a specific brain region in Alzheimer’s disease, where entorhinal cortex neurons degenerate at prodromal stages. To date, the reason for early manifestation of AD pathology in these specific cells is unknown. The student will be focused on analyzing cell-specific transcriptomics data from human patients and mouse models and to implement new methods for in vivo cell-specific, spatially resolved proteomics. By using these approaches the student is expected to contribute to our knowledge on the biology of this region and how is it modified in disease-relevant conditions. The student will be supported by an international team of supervisors with extensive experience in the field.

2. 1-2 Fully Funded PhD Position in multiple sclerosis

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research group has performed single-cell/spatial omics studies, identifying for instance several cell states within the oligodendrocyte lineage in development and disease (Science 2016, Dev Cell 2018, Nature Medicine 2018, Nature 2019, Nature Biotechnology 2021, 2022, Neuron 2022, Nature 2023, among others). Our recent findings suggest that oligodendrocyte lineage cells might present other functional properties than previously thought, transitioning for instance to disease-associated states. In addition, our results also suggest that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with multiple sclerosis susceptibility might be operational in oligodendrocyte lineage cells.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in clinical epidemiology and immunology

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD project is to study autoantibody patterns in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic inflammatory disease that targets the joints. Our research program aims at answering both etiological and clinical questions regarding RA and to move towards precision medicine. In this PhD project, the student will work with autoantibody profiles of patients with RA, with the aim of identifying individuals who would most benefit from targeted intervention that could prevent RA, and among those where disease could not be prevented, delay disease and decrease severe long-term consequences.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in immunology

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project the doctoral student will use the Hum-IL8 model to dissect the role of IL8 in cancer progression and in the resistance to ICB. The chemokine IL8 plays a complex role in tumor progression where it feeds tumor growth and induces the recruitment of tumor-associated neutrophils and granulocytic myeloid derived suppressor cells, promotes angiogenesis, activates epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and increases the drug resistance of tumor cells. In addition, elevated IL8 levels are strongly associated with poor outcome of ICB therapy in several cancer forms. Human anti-IL-8 antibodies have recently been developed, and phase I clinical trials in patients with solid tumors demonstrate that IL8-blockade is well tolerated and leads to reduced IL8 levels in serum.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Health Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral project takes its starting point in language barriers that pose major challenges in pediatric care and affect the ability of patients and parents to participate in care. This also affects the quality of care and patient safety. The overall aim of the project is to investigate communication across language barriers within Nordic pediatric healthcare. In the project, the doctoral student will be involved in the entire research process, which generates both broad and solid knowledge of the various research methods.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spatial organization of human brain cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

The main project is to create a comprehensive atlas of human brain tumours. This includes mapping out the healthy human brain in addition to a large number of various subtypes of benign and malignant tumours across all patient ages, with a particular focus on the immune cells present within tumours. As part of the first aim, we will analyse spatial transcriptomics data of the healthy human basal ganglia, with a focus on the subventricular zone, to establish a baseline of the healthy adult neurogenesis in comparison to tumorous growth. As part of the second aim, we will assess a wide range of human brain tumours based on their spatial organization using spatial transcriptomic methods, and cellular composition using single-cell multiomics. As part of the third aim, we will characterize interactions of tumour cells with cytotoxic immune cells within the same tumour samples.
