1. Fully Funded PhD Position in biosensors

Summary of PhD Program:

Biomarkers have been widely used in clinical trials for the baseline risk assessment and diagnosis of diseases. Their expression level has been closely related to the disease progression. Electrochemical biosensors are one type of self-contained integrated device, which is capable of providing specific quantitative or semi-quantitative analytical information. They can provide convenient and cost-effective determination of disease biomarkers with high sensitivity and selectivity. Many electrochemical biosensors have been developed for biomarker analysis in complex bio-environments like living cells and serum.

4. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in High Fidelity Atomic Entanglement

Summary of PhD Program:

Scaling up quantum technology systems based on laser cooled atoms or ions depends not only on chip-scale components for trapping, but also on accurate means for high-fidelity coherent control. Teams at NPL & Strathclyde have demonstrated entangled systems based on trapped ions and Rydberg atoms respectively. While different, these systems share similar challenges to achieving high fidelity of the requisite processes including coherent control and state readout using optical interrogation techniques. For example, deficiencies in the noise spectrum of lasers for coherent operations lead to infidelities in both systems; yet the techniques to quantify noise contributions, such as those developed by NPL, are common.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bentonite hydromechanical

Summary of PhD Program:

This 4-year PhD project is funded by UK Research Waste Management Research Support Office (RWM RSO) and aims to provide an experimental characterization on the hydromechanical behaviour of compacted bentonite when wetted with high salinity water. The PhD candidate will explore, at the micro and meso scales, the impact of salinity on key physical properties of bentonite (e.g. swelling pressure and hydraulic conductivity) and the fundamental mechanisms underlying these processes.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neural Network Processing

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD studentship is to research the combination of an infrared event-driven camera (EDC) with data processing algorithms based on neuromorphic (NM) processing and Spiking Neural Networks (SNN), addressing EPSRC’s mission inspired challenges for AI, Digitisation & Data. Event-driven detection and NM processing are finding applications in several engineering problems concerned with the detection of movement, alignment, tracking and autonomous navigation. Although EDC are now commercially available, they are limited to the visible and near-infrared detection band.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Intelligent Smart Grid Control

Summary of PhD Program:

The University of Strathclyde’s Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering is offering a three-year fully funded PhD in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Smart Grids. This is based within the Intelligent Systems Team (IST) and will investigate distributed intelligence and the application of state-of-the-art Multi Agent System (MAS) and related AI techniques to the control of distributed energy systems and smart grids. The IST conducts industrially relevant research in collaboration with extensive domestic and international industry partners; hence, the successful candidate should expect extensive industrial engagement with the intention to deploy the resulting research within industry.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in balance electricity systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The proposed research in this PhD project builds on an existing collaboration with the National Grid ESO’s Electricity National Control Centre (ENCC) where a decision-support tool is collaboratively developed to enable ENCC to use a very large number of units to balance electricity demand and generation in real-time operation of the system. The decision-support tool is based on a mathematical programming model where various constraints of dispatch electricity generators to meet demand are expressed mathematically. While the tool provides theoretical guarantees of converging to an optimal solution, the computational times to reach a solution may be very large. Given the nature of real-time balancing of the British system, there is a desire to reduce the computational time and be able to manage the accuracy versus time trade-off.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Robotic Automated Inspection

Summary of PhD Program:

Quality assurance during manufacture, combined with asset monitoring through service life, can together help to extract maximum useful life (whilst maintaining safety margins) from major engineering components used for example, in aircraft, sea-going vessels and renewable energy structures. The role of NDT (non-destructive testing) is central to such quality assurance, with NDT now being routinely built into the digital-twin approaches to lifecycle engineering employed in industry 4.0 manufacturing using advanced robotics.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Public Health Data Analysis

Summary of PhD Program:

We are offering a 3-year PhD scholarship focused on the analysis and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data generated by a longitudinal research study on health and well-being of adolescents in Malawi. The longitudinal study is set within the Global Health Research Group on Adolescent Health and Well-being, and thus the student will join a large research group working to improve the lives of young people in Malawi.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Suction Caisson Behaviour

Summary of PhD Program:

Suction caissons are a type of foundation commonly used to support offshore wind turbines in deep waters. They are installed by pumping water out of the caisson to create a ‘suction pressure’ (i.e. negative pressure relative to the ambient pressure) inside. Pressure cycling, which involves the cycling of the suction pressure, is often used to continue caisson penetration into the seabed when constant suction pressure is not effective. However, there is currently no method for predicting caisson penetration under pressure cycling, which can lead to significant uncertainty. There is also a critical lack of understanding of the potential effects of pressure cycling on the subsequent in-service performance of the caisson.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nuclear Components

Summary of PhD Program:

Traditionally, welding and inspection of high-integrity joints are separate, sequential, often manual processes in manufacturing and repair. Ultimately, these limitations reduce productivity, throughput, schedule certainty and increase rework if defects are detected at weld completion. As welding is a dynamic volumetric process, fusing joints of depth and width, this project seeks to exploit the volumetric imaging capability of ultrasonics, and introduce this inspection modality directly into the welding process control loop. By investigating robotic in-process ultrasonic inspection and control, this project aims to deliver high-integrity welds right, first time, every time and overcome current technical and process limitations.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D Printing

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of the project is to investigate sensor-driven inspection and control of robotic metal 3D printing, to safely deliver high-quality parts right first time, every time, in challenging industrial environments. Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) (3D printing), has rapidly come to prominence as a valid and convenient alternative to other production techniques, thanks to a growing body of evidence of its advantages and real potential in terms of lead-time reduction, design flexibility, capability and reduced manufacturing waste.
