Dr. Frautschy’s laboratory studies Alzheimer’s and Mixed Dementia, Parkinson’s disease as well as traumatic brain injury in preclinical models. Our research focuses on mechanisms of disease as well as interventions with primary focus on inflammatory mechanisms contributing to neurodegeneration and behavioral and cognitive loss. We conduct studies in animal models that allow us to understand the time course of progression of these diseases, so that we can appropriately address therapeutic interventions. The laboratory of Dr. Anil Sapru focuses on the pathogenetic and prognostic significance of biological markers in children with critical illnesses. The Epeldegui lab, which is in the UCLA AIDS Institute, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA seeks a Post-Doctoral Scholar for a multiple year research appointment. The NIH grant funded position will work under the director of Marta Epeldegui, Ph.D., M.S., Associate Professor-in-Residence. Dr. Epeldegui’s research focuses in the role of immune dysfunction and cancer, especially AIDS-associated B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (ARL). ARL remains a significant problem even in the era of combination anti-retroviral treatment (cART). Her research work and others have shown that B cell activation and microbial translocation precede the development of ARL, with elevated levels of biomarkers associated with B cell activation and microbial translocation seen prior to ARL diagnosis. Moreover, biomarkers of inflammation, B cell activation and microbial translocation are also associated with cancer prognosis. Her laboratory studies how inflammation, microbial translocation, viral infections and other events may lead to lymphomagenesis and pathogenesis of ARL.

The Surgical Neurmodulation and Brain Mapping Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Ausaf Bari has a novel research program to study human reward, pain and decision-making by directly recording neuronal activity in patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures. These include patients undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation and patients with epilepsy undergoing electrode placement. Human single-unit, local field potential (LFP), and iEEG data can also be recorded in the human medial temporal lobe and other cortical regions, as well as the ability to employ Deep Brain Stimulation in awake, conscious patients implanted with intracranial electrodes for clinical purposes. The lab also uses fMRI and DT to study non-invasive methods for investigating brain circuits involved in reward, pain and decision-making. We seek an experienced scientist to advance our research at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Neurosurgery in the laboratory of Daniel C. Lu, MD, PhD. Dr. Lu’s laboratory studies neural circuits within the spinal cord. Strategies that recover function after spinal cord injury (SCI) by exciting the interneuronal circuitry through electrical stimulation and pharmacological agonist therapy are subjects of our research. We conduct studies in animal models that decipher the mechanistic basis of recovery after neuromodulation. We are seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher to validate these findings in humans through clinical trials. The fellow will also be responsible for helping to supervise graduate students and undergraduate student researchers, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals.
