1. PhD Programs in Biomolecular Medicine

Summary of PhD Positions:

The research project focusses on the study of molecular mechanisms underlying a group of inherited conditions caused by defects in five different enzymes necessary for proper assembly of the proteoglycan linker region and which are collectively called “linkeropathies”. In this project, knock-in zebrafish models will be generated and phenotypically characterized. Several genetic, transcriptomic, proteomic and glycomic approaches will be combined on relevant tissues to investigate and elucidate molecular pathways that are shared and/or different between these conditions to obtain a better understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms.

4. PhD Programs in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Positions:

Telecommunication networks emit radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields using antennas. Humans, both users, and non-users of these networks are exposed to RF electromagnetic fields emitted by a range of telecommunication technologies simultaneously. As networks evolve over time, new technologies (new precoding techniques, new frequencies, (Ma)MiMo antennas, smart surfaces, etc) are introduced into the network in order to improve communication from the network towards the users and the other way around.

The introduction of these new technologies changes our exposure to electromagnetic fields. However, this exposure is at the moment not well quantified. It is important to quantify this human exposure in order to assess whether this exposure has any health effects on humans. Therefore, we are looking for a candidate who can improve our understanding of this RF electromagnetic field exposure.

5. PhD Programs in Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering

Summary of PhD Positions:

As digital twins are a new and promising concept in mechatronics, we have opened a vacancy for a strategic and challenging PhD position with the topic ‘Digital Twins for Mechatronic Applications based on CAD, AI and Vision’ under the supervision of Prof. Jeroen De Kooning and Prof. Kurt Stockman.

In this PhD, it is our intention to start from a CAD model of an industrial application, and upgrade it to a digital twin by combining a motion simulation with vision data. Open research questions are how to construct the application architecture to realize this digital twin, how to integrate software modules for parameter identification and (vision) data processing, how to distribute the computational load between real-time and non-real-time processes, and how to use the digital twin to realize an added value to the human. In the past years, the research group in Kortrijk has built up critical expertise and laboratory infrastructure to support this PhD.

13. PhD Programs in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Positions:

Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure.

This involves characterizing and eventually predicting both power generation (from renewables) and consumption behavior (and its flexibility, e.g., what portion thereof can be shifted in time), using data analytics techniques, constructing generative models, applying machine learning, etc. The next step is to actively control power consumption, e.g., by developing algorithms for energy management systems (to steer power consumption and/or decide what to use local production for, e.g., push into the grid or local storage).

15. PhD Programs in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Positions:

The “WAVES” research group is the expertise center of the Department of Information Technology of Ghent University/IMEC in Belgium for measurements, simulations and modeling of the radio channel and electromagnetic exposure of current and future wireless networks. 6th generation wireless networks will use new mm-wave and sub-terahertz spectrum bands to realize the bandwidth needed for ubiquitous connectivity.

The exploration of this new radio spectrum is needed to enable beyond 5G high-capacity applications. In the 140 GHz D-band (110 to 170 GHz) sufficient bandwidth is available to realize 6G applications such as wireless backhaul and fixed wireless access, close proximity data kiosks, and augmented and virtual reality. Device-free D-band passive indoor localization (radar) plays also a critical role in emerging assisted-living applications in the elder care, as well as in smart home, entertainment, industrial, and security applications.

17. PhD Programs in Biotechnology

Summary of PhD Positions:

The conversion of renewable resources (e.g. biomass, CO2, etc.) to medium- and high volume molecules via catalytic processes (e.g. homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, biocatalysis, etc.) is one of the pillars of the bio-based transition. Yet, when considered individually, most catalytic technologies have intrinsic limitations and critical bottlenecks that hamper their development.

Coupling biology and heterogeneous catalysis in tandem reactions has been postulated as a powerful way forward to circumvent individual process bottlenecks and establish novel, more cost-efficient and sustainable catalytic technologies to help make the transition to a bio-based society. COBICAT is an interdisciplinary project that will explore the coupling of biocatalysis and heterogeneous catalysis to produce aviation fuel from renewable resources, as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the potential of such catalytic tandem coupling.

21. PhD Programs in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Positions:

Insects are the foundation of all terrestrial life due to their diversity and ecological role, their influence on agriculture, natural resources, and human health. At the same time, insects are most vulnerable to human activities affecting the environment, which has already led to a dramatic decrease in their abundance and species richness. One of these activities that potentially play a role in this phenomenon is emissions of Radio-Frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields. These fields are used in telecommunication networks to enable (wireless) telecommunication between billions of users worldwide.

Electromagnetic fields are emitted into the environment and consequently, living organisms, including insects, are exposed to these fields. It is currently unknown: (1) how these electromagnetic fields interact with insects and (2) at what levels these interactions might have biological effects on insects. You will answer these questions.
