1. PhD Programs in Materials Chemistry

Summary of PhD Positions:

CO2 capture, storage and utilization is judged critical to mitigate the rapid rise in the atmospheric CO2 concentration that causes climate change and threats sustainable development of our times. A key problem is the gigantic mass of CO2 emitted into the air, which asks for robust, efficient and economically viable approaches that are currently missing and limited by the lack of suitable materials.

To break through this barrier, our team aims to develop metal-free dual-function porous (bio)polymers to capture and convert CO2 under ambient conditions into useful chemicals with high efficiency. We have the ambition to radically advance scientific knowledge and technology to fixate and convert CO2 at scale into value-added chemicals that further reduces the consumption of fossil resources.

2. PhD Programs in Materials Chemistry

Summary of PhD Positions:

The position is part of the SSF-FFL8 project SUSLIG that constitute research on lignin-based materials for a sustainable future. The doctoral student will develop new lignin-based adhesives and composites that withstand challenging conditions. The principles of green chemistry, reversible chemistry and non-covalent interactions are central concepts in the synthesis of the new materials. In addition to the phenolic hydroxyl groups, supramolecular assembly of lignin will be studied to gain control over the properties of the macroscopic system.

3. PhD Programs in Materials Chemistry

Summary of PhD Positions:

Nanoporous materials such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent selective adsorbents and catalysts because of their uniform pore structures at molecular dimensions. Electron crystallography has unique advantages in studying the structures of porous crystals that are too small for conventional X-ray diffraction. Recent developments of electron diffraction-based methods have revolutionalized structural characterization of nanocrystals, from inorganic and hybrid materials, pharmaceuticals to proteins. Prof. Zou’s group has been developing new electron crystallographic methods, and is internationally leading in electron crystallography and porous materials.

7. 1-2 PhD Programs in Bioinformatics

Summary of PhD Positions:

Protein structure is essential for understanding their function as well as for developing drugs targeting proteins. Recently, a deep learning method that can predict the structure of most proteins was made freely available, and a database with predicted structure was released. However, proteins do not act alone – they act together with other proteins. Therefore, the next major challenge is to use these types of methods for predicting protein-protein interactions.

Initial studies from us have shown that it is possible to predict accurate structures of a large part of dimeric proteins using either a modified version of AlphaFold2 or AlphaFold-multimer. However, there are still many proteins that cannot be built accurately, nor are we able always to distinguish interacting from non-interacting protein pairs and to build larger complexes accurately is still an unsolved problem.

In this project, we are recruiting 1-2 PhD students which will work together with two recently recruited postdocs to leverage recent advances in the field of machine learning to build better deep-learning models for predicting protein-protein interactions and to apply these methods to biologically relevant problems.

8. PhD Programs in Psychology – Working memory and flexibility

Summary of PhD Positions:

Working-memory (WM) can be defined as the ability to actively retain and manipulate information in mind over a short period of time. This ability is a core component of cognition, involved in most cognitive functions. Despite being so crucial WM is very limited. In fact, a hallmark of WM is its limitation in terms of the amount, the fidelity and the time information can be retained in mind. On the other hand WM is extremely flexible with subjects adapting strategies to match the demands of the task at hand. The goal of this project is to characterize both the flexibility and the deterioration of performance in WM tasks, as well as the corresponding neuronal signatures.

11. PhD Programs in non-Hermitian topological physics

Summary of PhD Positions:

The emerging field of non-Hermitian topological physics draws inspiration from two seemingly distinct streams of developments: 1) During the past few decades, notions of topology revolutionised the way we fundamentally understand phases of matter. 2) In parallel, there has been a significant development in the realm of photonics—the science of light—where non-Hermitian physics is ubiqutious. This particular PhD project is theoretical and knowledge of both many-body physics and non-Hermitian physics are important merits for a successful candidate this project. The starting date should be as soon as possible.

15. PhD Programs in Theorical Physics in Open Quantum Systems

Summary of PhD Positions:

Open quantum systems describe the interaction between a quantum system with its environment. It is known that desired quantum properties, such as entanglement, are typically suppressed by decoherence such that their applicabilities for practical implications become limited. Hence, a goal is to minimize the influence of decoherence. However, the problem is of fundamental interest on its own, not only for future quantum technological applications, but for providing a deeper understanding of these processes. In this project, the goal is not per se to find methods that minimize losses, but instead to understand the physics behind the interplay between different sub-systems, whether it is a system and its environment, or two sub-systems.

16. PhD Programs in Molecular Biosciences

Summary of PhD Positions:

This PhD student position is available in the laboratory headed by Dr. Deniz M. Ozata. In mammals, male germ cell development (spermatogenesis) is an exquisitely timed program comprising of germ cell self-renewal, meiosis, and final differentiation to give rise to haploid sperm. The successful formation of a sperm therefore depends on a tightly controlled gene expression program. Our research strives to understand how this gene expression program is regulated such that spermatogenesis progresses in a timely manner.

We aim to decipher the functions of key transcription factors (TFs) and the transcriptional networks formed by the interactions of these TFs, as well as tiny regulatory RNAs–PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs)–in controlling the gene expression during male germ cell development.

17. PhD Programs in Atomic Physics

Summary of PhD Positions:

The gas-phase molecular dynamics and action spectroscopy groups at Stockholm University Department of Physics invite applications for a PhD position in experimental physics. Nano-solvated ions, i.e. gas-phase clusters with one or several solvent molecules weakly bound to a molecular ion, play an important roll in a variety of environments.

In Earth’s atmosphere, sea-spray clusters form reactive seeds for aerosol formation. In outer space, photochemical reactions at the icy surfaces of dust grains contribute to the chemical diversity of the complexity of interstellar clouds. And in the inner space within photo-active proteins, nano-environmental interactions with water molecules tune the optical response of biochromophores. We investigate the structure and photophysics of these systems in a bottom-up approach combining optical spectroscopy and mass spectrometery.
