Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Weather and climate predictions are of central importance to users spanning industries, charities, governments, and the public. For users to make cost-effective decisions, we must provide an estimate of uncertainty in the forecast. Arguably the dominant source of uncertainty is due to approximations made when building the model used to make predictions. However, representing model uncertainty is largely an afterthought: current approaches are crude and lack physical foundations. This project will bring model uncertainty to the fore. By seamlessly addressing the problem across weather and climate timescales, we will develop the foundational understanding needed to transform the reliability of Earth-system predictions.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This is an exciting opportunity for a well-trained, enthusiastic, and self-motivated scientist to join the lab of Dr Anthony Roberts. The project aims to elucidate how membrane proteins are trafficked into the cell’s antenna, the primary cilium. The ability of cilia to concentrate a unique set of membrane proteins underlies processes as diverse as vision, olfaction, appetite control, and developmental signalling. Evidence suggests that membrane protein transport into cilia relies on massive molecular “trains” that move along the ciliary microtubules under the power of kinesin and dynein motors. This project involves using cryo-EM, cryo-ET, FIB milling, and biochemical approaches to understand the basis for membrane protein transport into cilia, building on recent advances in the group (Cell 2022, PMID: 36462505). The research will be conducted in a friendly and supportive atmosphere with access to outstanding facilities and within a vibrant postdoc community.

We invite applications to join the research group funded by NERC award: “NSFGEO-NERC: Understanding surface-to-bed meltwater pathways across the Greenland Ice Sheet using machine-learning and physics-based models.” The post holder will work with Laura Stevens (Earth Sciences) and Ian Hewitt (Mathematical Institute), together with international collaborators, to conduct numerical modeling of subglacial hydrology. Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) mass loss acceleration is driven by increasing rates of surface melt and calving of marine-terminating outlet glaciers. The links between increasing surface melt and ice dynamics are poorly understood, in part because we do not mechanistically understand where and under what conditions meltwater accesses the ice-sheet bed at a continental scale.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The aim of the project is to generate cerebellar organoids from hiPSCs as innovative models to better understand early processes underpinning human cerebellar development and associated diseases. Despite a wealth of knowledge gained from animal studies, recent studies indicate that the human cerebellum is morphologically and transcriptomically distinct from mice and even non-human primates. As such, to better understand the mechanisms driving the development of the human cerebellum and how these go awry in disease, we need improved and humanized models. The Becker lab is one of the pioneers of generating cerebellar models from hiPSCs. We initially developed a robust and reproducible protocol for the generation of cerebellar neurons from hiPSCs (Watson et al, 2018), which we recently adapted into a protocol for the production of xeno-free 3D cerebellar organoids (Nayler et al, 2021).

This is a unique translational science opportunity to develop and apply AI to tackle key questions in medicine such as understanding response and resistance to treatment, developing novel patient stratification strategies for biomarker selection and population health insights.
Application Deadline: 11-Sep-2023
51. Postdoctoral Position
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Applications are invited for 2 Postdoctoral Research Scientists to join an exciting research project on viral immunology, particularly infections with Coronavirus in the laboratory of Professor Gavin Screaton and Associate Professor Juthathip Mongkolsapaya. Coronaviruses causes a massive healthcare burden. We have considerable experience in the investigation of the immune responses to the virus and publish well. You will be involved in a broadly-based research program covering a number of aspects of viral immunology, particularly humoral immune-responses, and vaccine development.

52. Postdoctoral Position
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Associate in Chemistry to work under the supervision of Professor Andrew Baldwin, the posts are full time and fixed term to 31 August 2026. The ERC funded project is part of a wider programme of work to establish that membraneless organelles, biological liquid droplets, are effectively regions of organic solvent, suspended inside cells and that the properties of each are governed by the specific intermolecular interactions responsible for stabilising the chains. This presents an exciting opportunity to demonstrate how fundamental principles from physical chemistry have been incorporated into cellular function.
