Summary of PhD Program:

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) “Chemical Communication in Ecological Systems” in Jena, Germany, invites applications for 5 PhD positions beginning in September 2023 – January 2024. The overarching research topic is the use of molecular, chemical and neurobiological techniques to experimentally explore ecological interactions under natural conditions. The main focus is on the relationship between plants, microbes and herbivores, and their environment, as well as the evolutionary and behavioral consequences of these interactions. We offer 9 exciting projects focusing on different organisms and approaches.

2. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in interface of physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The three PhD student positions are fully funded and part of three different projects at the interface of physics/optics and biology/medicine. One project is part of a local DFG Collaborative Research Center “Exploring brain mechanics”. Here, the successful candidate will use Brillouin microscopy (BM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to establish the basis of tissue mechanical properties in the zebrafish spinal cord. The second project is a collaboration with a clinical colleague at the university hospital where we want to use real-time deformability cytometry (RT-DC) and Brillouin microscopy to investigate the connection between cell mechanics and immune cell migration in the context of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Summary of PhD Program:

Our laboratory aims to reconstitute the initiation of autophagy using purified proteins. Autophagy is a process of regulated degradation that has been proven to play a wide range of roles in cellular housekeeping, including removal of damaged or unneeded organelles, intracellular pathogens, and protein aggregates. It is an essential biological pathway that promotes organismal health, longevity and helps combat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Building on exciting recent data, this project focuses on the reconstitution and structural-functional characterization of newly identified and purified macromolecular super-complexes. This project combines a large variety of biochemical and cell biological techniques with X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, and will be tailored to the particular interests of the successful candidate.
