For the success of metallic FM, there is a critical need to understand how different metals can be combined in AM to achieve desired properties. We seek to use 3D printing to create novel multimaterial functional structures capable of new ways of sensing underlying material properties. We will use low dimensional materials, including graphene, perovskites and nanodiamonds incorporated into polymers, ceramics and glasses and we will use 3D printing to form them into geometrically complex structures. Construction of large and deep shafts in urban areas is necessary for various construction activities, such as tunnel construction where shafts serve as integral components of the tunnel construction and often operational phases. As tunnels are constructed ever deeper due to the congestion of underground space, so must the shafts be sunk to deeper levels. Shafts may suffer stability issues as a result of various factors, which can, in the worst case, result in catastrophic failures, or more typically in ground movements. Early diagnosis of cancer is an extremely challenging task, meaning that often a diagnosis is obtained at very late stages (e.g. when malignant tumours are large enough to feel or see in ultrasound/MRI etc). Currently there is a major global push to develop technologies that allow tumours to be found, e.g., when they are the size of a grain of sand (instead of the size of a golf ball), or even to detect secondary/tertiary effects that early cancer has on non-tumorous tissue. Furthermore, new technologies are needed to support the gold-standard diagnostic pathway: biopsy + histopathology. Tissue biopsies are challenging and destructive procedures and histopathology is severely understaffed as an industry (there are more snow leopards in the wild than histopathologists in the UK!). Clearly new early cancer detection technology is needed and you can help create the next generation of clinical technology.

Tinnitus (commonly described as ringing in the ears) is a condition where sound is heard in the ears or head without any external sound source, i.e., a subjective phenomenon. It is thought to affect approximately 5% of children in the UK. Tinnitus can negatively impact physical, cognitive, and emotional health, and disrupt daily life for these children. Our lab recently developed the 36-item ‘Impact of Tinnitus in Children Questionnaire’ (iTICQ). This is the first clinical questionnaire to be developed to measure the overall impact of tinnitus on children. The next important step for this questionnaire is to evaluate its psychometric properties to ensure it provides a reliable measure of individual differences in tinnitus impact, and that it is responsive to changes in tinnitus impact over time or after treatment.
