2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Implementing Smart SiC Power Modules for the Automotive Energy Transition
Summary of PhD Program:
Using SiC switches and smart power modules in electric vehicles (EVs) can significantly improve the efficiency and performance of the vehicle’s power electronics systems. SiC switches offer lower switching losses and higher temperature tolerance compared to traditional silicon-based switches, which can result in higher efficiency and power density of the EV’s inverter. Smart power modules integrate power semiconductor devices, gate drivers, protection circuits, and other components in a compact package, which can simplify the design and reduce the size and weight of the EV’s power electronics system. By incorporating SiC switches and smart power modules in EVs, manufacturers can improve the vehicle’s range, acceleration, and overall performance while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Condition-Based Monitoring for Maritime Applications
Summary of PhD Program:
Structures of sea-going vessels are subject to fatigue and corrosion degradation as they operate under harsh dynamic loading and environmental conditions. Despite the extensive knowledge available for design and analysis of these structures, large uncertainties introduced at different stages of the vessel fabrication (e.g., initial quality of the material and welds) and operation (e.g., loading history and environmental conditions) impede accurate prediction of crack and corrosion development in the hull. These uncertainties induce increased probability of incidents, reduced efficiency of inspection and maintenance planning, and increased lifecycle costs. To counter these, this PhD position aims at development of monitoring systems that can accurately, reliably, and quantitatively identify fatigue and corrosion damage in ship hulls using guided ultrasonic waves.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Novel DC-DC Converter for Plant Energy Harvesting
Summary of PhD Program:
Collecting energy from the environment to power IoT devices has been a hot topic for decades and continues to develop. The goal of this project is to develop a novel MPPT technique to quickly and accurately find and track the MPP condition of the plant energy harvester. A DC-DC converter will also be designed to demonstrate the system.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogen Bubble Experiments
Summary of PhD Program:
Hydrogen can be made in a sustainable way in electrolysers, using green electricity. In this process hydrogen and oxygen bubbles form on electrodes inside a liquid electrolyte. These bubbles are insulating, so cause additional resistance. Bubbles are however also beneficial since they locally remove the dissolved gas that could otherwise cross-over to the other electrode and cause explosive gas mixtures. Therefore it will be beneficial to have a good understanding of the behaviour of both hydrogen and oxygen bubbles.
