This PhD project is a part of SeAFEED, a €1.2M partnership between QUB, the University of Limerick and ATU Sligo, funded by the RoI Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), and the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). Assisted by industrial partners, we will explore and improve the use of seaweed as a source of ingredients for animal feed. SeAFEED will investigate multiple aspects of the supply chain and the underlying science and engineering, from seaweed cultivation and harvesting, through to extraction of compounds from the seaweed, production and formulation of feed pellets, and use of these pellets as feed in pig farming.

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to develop new polymer materials and manufacturing processes to produce future recyclable, thermoplastic Type IV hydrogen storage vessels. This will be achieved by systematically developing demonstrator prototypes from a range of tailored thermoplastic polymer liners and thermoplastic polymer fibres to showcase the potential to establish this cutting-edge hydrogen gas storage technology. This has the potential to fundamentally change, significantly improve and ultimately revolutionise rotomoulding and the manufacturing practices for Type IV hydrogen tanks. However, they need to be proven as technically and commercially viable.

This PhD project aims to investigate and improve the electrode/electrolyte interface. The application of post-treatments of the carbon felts, using oxidative activation combined with surface-decoration with nano-electrocatalysts, is expected to yield significant improvements in the electrochemical reversibility and to lower activation overpotential, resulting in higher battery efficiency. The project aims to focus particularly on iron and vanadium-based electrolytes consisting of metal complexes with ligand systems that have so far not been investigated in terms of their electrode / electrolyte interactions. These chemically activated electrodes will be investigated using various in-situ, ex-situ and operando spectroscopic techniques (Raman, FTIR, XPS, EPR) to provide insight into the underlying activation mechanisms.

The project will utilise a combination of data-based modelling and field trial-based investigations. Historical AFBI grass testing and breeding data resources and past GrassCheck results will be used as training data for a machine learning approach to developing a dynamic model. Field studies on grass and clover monocultures, mixtures and multi-species swards will be used to ground-truth the key parameters and interaction dynamics in the model. Summary of PhD Program:

Most academics agree that the YD was caused by a large-scale meltwater event: over millennia, gradual climate warming caused melting of North American ice sheets and build-up of a large glacial lake. When this lake was breached, large amounts of meltwater were released suddenly into the North Atlantic Ocean, causing a collapse of the ocean circulation with subsequent climate events felt across large parts of the Earth. However, a group of researchers has proposed that the trigger of the YD was a comet impact (YDIH), which would have caused the collapse of the North American ice sheets, global-scale fires, the extinction of megafauna, and archaeological changes (Firestone et al. 2007, but see Blaauw et al. 2012).

Based at Queen’s University Belfast in the Centre for Public History, and working closely in partnership with PRONI and with several community-based organisations around Belfast’s Falls and Shankill Roads, the research will engage local communities in collecting and sharing their social histories with public audiences. Summary of PhD Program:

The pituitary is a small gland (about the size of a pea) below the brain inside the cranium. Pituitary tumours are the second most common type of intracranial tumour and are called pituitary neuroendocrine tumours (PitNETs). Many PitNETs secrete hormones (called functioning tumours) that cascade through the body to regulate processes like growth, fertility and metabolism. These can be treated with medication to control hormone levels. Other PitNETs do not secrete hormones (called non-functioning). These non-functioning PitNETs are typically managed with surgery; however, some may also require radiotherapy to prevent tumour growth.
