Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The main objective of the PATH_CH-Lux project is to investigate enabling conditions and barriers in the school-to-work transition and the general transition into adulthood of young people with disabilities embedded in differently structured (regional) education systems and labor markets. To better understand their situation, we analyze different perspectives: that of the young adults, the employers and the social workers. We use different, complementary methods: biographical interviews with young people regarding their experiences; factorial surveys/Vignette analyzes and written surveys of employers about applicants with different disabilities, impairments, social background, gender and migration background; and interviews with social workers on how they support these adolescents and young adults in their transition to the labor market.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
As a group, we seek to understand and model human visual processing and cognition. For this purpose, we develop new models of these processes based on mechanistic ideas from psychophysics, normative ideas like efficient coding or probabilistic inference, and/or machine learning techniques like deep neural networks. Furthermore, we work on better statistical methods for evaluating such models based on both frequentist and Bayesian techniques with influences from machine learning. Finally, we run behavioral experiments to use our improved methods to test our models. Concrete topics of interest include image segmentation and its interactions with lateral connections like divisive normalization or facilitation, extending image computable models to include temporal processing, Bayesian alternatives to representational similarity analysis, and human perceptual inference and decision making. Within the research interests of the group, the PostDoc will enjoy relative freedom to develop their individual research profile.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The UltraBO project aims to design and implement novel parallel hybrid optimization algorithms for modern supercomputers. Many experiments reported in the literature demonstrate that high-quality results are obtained through hybridization. However, finding efficient and effective hybridization schemes is challenging and tedious. On the other hand, according to Top500 modern supercomputers are increasingly large (millions of cores), heterogeneous (various CPUs, GPU, FPGA, …) and less and less reliable (Mean Time Between Failures – MTBF<1h) making their programming increasingly complex. The design and implementation of parallel algorithms for these ultra-scale supercomputers is still in its infancy especially in combinatorial optimization.

Since 2006, the University of Luxembourg has invested in its own High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities. Special focus was laid on developing large computing power combined with huge data storage capacity to accelerate the research performed in intensive computing and large-scale data analytics (Big Data). This characteristic distinguishes the HPC center at the university from many other HPC facilities, which often concentrate on only one of these two pillars. Nowadays, the UL HPC team is deeply involved in national and European HPC developments. Further information can be found on hpc.uni.lu. The activities include classical HPC applications such as simulation and modeling, but also emerging ones including artificial intelligence and machine learning, bridging computational science, with data science, and data management (IoT/Edge/HPC).
