11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Explaining Tax Morale with Social Exchange Psychology

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project will investigate why people pay taxes. Tax compliance and tax morale – the intrinsic motivation to pay taxes – receive increasing attention from scholars and tax administrations. Research has identified various economic and socio-psychological determinants of tax compliance, such as audit probability, fine levels, social norms, or fairness considerations. Importantly, empirical studies of tax compliance do not reveal consistent effects, neither of economic factors nor of socio-psychological factors. To better understand these puzzling findings, an overarching approach is needed to determine when these factors influence tax behavior and when their influence is suppressed.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Graph Neural Networks

Summary of PhD Program:

The success of deep learning has garnered enthusiasm and concern within the general public and scientific community alike. A source of concern stems from the lack of interpretability in these models, rendering them “black boxes”. In response, the field of explainable AI (XAI) has emerged, aiming to overcome this challenge by developing models that provide explanations for the predictions made by these black boxes. While significant research efforts have been devoted to explaining the predictions of models operating with image, text, and video data, fewer advances have been observed with graph learning algorithms.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Financial Forensics & Analytics

Summary of PhD Program:

To aid in the modelling of financial distress beyond traditional ratio analysis, scores such as Altman’s Z are often used as a reference, but they tend to require inaccessible data or complex predictive scoring exercises by the hand of expensive human analysts. In addition, and probably more problematically, currently applications of perceptron/deep neural networks are typically a-symmetric and tightly coupled with a particular at hand. In particular, they focus on the modelling and analytics exercise only, while neglecting the underlying data pipeline and its automated governance as well as the data productization and discovery opportunities, which remain to this day largely unexplored. That makes such solutions as rather brittle, failing to meet the expectations of business, and exceedingly case-specific in nature. This makes actionable research to resolve these challenges of critical importance.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Psycholinguistic Research

Summary of PhD Program:

Traditionally, analyses of temporal response variables in psycholinguistic studies have focused on effects of predictors on the mean of the response variable distribution. The effects of predictors, however, need not be constant over time: some may arise early, while others may appear later. In addition, the qualitative nature of predictor effects may change over time. The aim of the research that you will be conducting is to (further) explore the potential of Piecewise Additive Mixed Models (PAMMs), a state-of-the-art statistical technique that offers insight into the temporal dynamics of predictor effects, even when the response variable consists of a single measurement.
