1. PhD Programs in WWSC: Wood-based barriers for wood-based materials
Summary of PhD Positions:
Paper/wood-based materials have poor barrier properties. By learning how nature creates moisture and gas barriers, we have developed synthetic barrier biopolyesters (representing the cuticle layer of fruits/ plants). So far, not all components of a natural cuticle have been implemented. Hence, the remaining components, other than the biopolyester, will be investigated.
The focus of the project will be to 1) create complete cuticle structures and 2) analyze the effects of the various components on barrier and physical properties. By mimicking the structure of the entire cuticle, it becomes possible to fully understand the mechanisms behind natural barriers (e.g. in apples and tomatoes) and tailor cuticle-based barrier layers on wood-based materials. For a successful implementation of these cuticle barriers in e.g. packagings, it is also important to have available biosources. The focus will therefore also be to locate readily available biosources.

6. PhD Programs in high-speed datacenter networking
Summary of PhD Positions:
Today’s cloud and edge datacenters struggle to keep the pace of multi-100Gbps network interface card. A CPU transmitting 40Gbps of traffic consumes as much as 70% of its cycles, which cannot be used to run any applications. The recent rise of programmable high-speed hardware devices including P4 switches and SmartNICs have opened the doors to massive potential performance gains by offloading networking stacks from CPUs to hardware.
Yet, reaping the benefits of such devices is today a largely unsolved problems. For example, multi-terabit per second network devices drop packets depending on specific time patterns. In this project, we plan to build radically new frameworks for controlling network and their performance in a programmatic manner. This research aims to publish work at the top venues in network systems (i.e., SIGCOMM and NSDI) and collaborate with industrial partners (e.g., Intel, Nvidia, Ericsson, Saab). In this project, you will have great possibilities to make impact in society and industry.

17. PhD Programs in Power Electronics
Summary of PhD Positions:
The position will be located in the power electronics research group within the school of electrical engineering and computer science at KTH. The group carries out research in several fields, notably high-power electronics for power transmission grids, and applications of wide-bandgap power semiconductors. The ongoing electrification of road vehicles is now also moving to the field of commercial vehicles (trucks and buses) which currently cause 5% — 7% of the total global CO2 emissions.
The project will study integrated drivetrains for such heavy vehicles, focussing on the power electronics. New power semiconductors based on silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) potentially offer great benefits in terms of efficiency and compactness. However, to keep the investment and maintenance cost at competitive levels, it is important to achieve sufficient reliability and lifetime in the drivetrains. Te doctoral student will investigate the lifetime of power semiconductor components used inside the inverter for traction application.

18. PhD Programs in side-channel analysis of post-quantum cryptographic algorithms
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are looking for a PhD student to work on a project in the field of hardware security with a focus on side-channel analysis of post-quantum cryptographic algorithms. Side channel analysis is one of the most effective attacks against currently implemented cryptographic algorithms. They exploit the correlation between the physical measurements (power consumption, electromagnetic emissions, timing) taken at different points during the calculation with the cryptographic key.
Side channel attacks are orders of magnitude more efficient than conventional mathematical cryptanalysis and are very practical to perform. Furthermore, with advances in deep learning (DL), side-channel attacks gained a powerful ally. Because DL techniques are good at finding correlations in raw data, they enable the adversary to bypass many existing countermeasures and break protected implementations. Given large investments in artificial intelligence, we are likely to see an explosion of DL-based security breaches.

Summary of PhD Positions:
With the global quest for sustainability, there is a strong drive for developing bio-based alternatives to today’s materials to replace fossil-based materials and provide future materials with new and advanced functionalities. One of the main challenges in this development is that for water-based fabrication processes of lignocellulosic material concepts, it is essential to remove water as efficiently as possible, striving at low energy demand, specifically for drying. This is a technical challenge. Successful processes/technologies should be characterised by low energy demand and reduced water demand during processing and follow the “principles of green chemistry”.

23. PhD Programs in WWSC: Biodegradability of modified wood biopolymers
Summary of PhD Positions:
Managed end-of-life is a prerequisite for development of sustainable polymer materials. Some polymer products are difficult to recover and recycle and then biodegradability is an attractive property. However, it is crucial that the material will degrade in the expected end-of-life environment and that it will not release harmful compounds or persistent microplastics. Cellulose and other wood biopolymers are inherently biodegradable, but chemical modification typically reduces susceptibility to biodegradation.
We will investigate how new chemical modifications influence biodegradability of wood biopolymers and develop test methodology to enable rapid screening of biodegradation potential early in the material development. This will reveal important structure-degradability relationships for development of materials with tailored degradability in targeted environment.

26. PhD Programs in WWSC: Structure and properties of lignin materials
Summary of PhD Positions:
A significant progress in the understanding of lignin and lignin based materials have been achieved during the last decade. 27. PhD Programs in WWSC: wood-based energy storage materials
Summary of PhD Positions:
Powerful electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices is a major challenge to our society. Wood has a hierarchical cellular structure with pronounced anisotropy, providing efficient mass transport for water and nutrients in the living tree. The hierarchically porous and low-tortuosity structure of wood offers opportunities for fluidic permeation, ionic transport, and gas desorption at the microscale and nanoscale, which are important features for making electrode materials in energy storage devices.
In this project, we focus on the strategies for tailoring wood structures and conductivity of wood-based composite materials, particularly the fundamentals down to molecular level on how to build conductive paths inside pre-treated wood samples and explore the relationship between the hierarchical porous structure and the electrochemical properties. We are aiming to construct multifunctional wood-based energy storage composite materials with good electrochemical performance using simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly processes, addressing the UN Sustainability Development Goals 7 and 12.

28. PhD Programs in WWSC: Modeling of cellulose-water interactions
Summary of PhD Positions:
Most cellulose-based materials are subject to drying at some stage, usually from water. This is a costly process in terms of energy and it also affects the final structure depending on the conditions. Specifically, it may lead to strong aggregation (hornification) resulting in poor material properties. In this project drying effects in cellulose materials are addressed at the molecular level using atomistic computer simulations which are compared to experimental results from, primarily, solid-state NMR.

30. PhD Programs in WWSC: Green Chemical Modification of Cellulose in Water
Summary of PhD Positions:
Chemical modification of cellulose has been an active research topic since the dawn of wood science. Unfortunately, the standard strategy for the covalent chemical modification of cellulose in water is using enormous excess reactants, making the process highly unsustainable. This project addresses this challenge by unique chemistry focusing on the chemical modification of cellulose in water. The aim is to allow targeted installation of polymers, oligomers, and small molecules to cellulose substrate with water as the only reaction solvent. Beyond that, the modification should also adhere to a circular material economy where all components can be reused and recycled.

32. PhD Programs in WWSC: Sustainable biotech to circularise forest waste
Summary of PhD Positions:
Thousands of tonnes of sludge are produced each year at pulp and paper mills. We aim to recover components from this waste.
