8. PhD Position in Utilization of Sustainable Grouting Alternatives to Fly Ash in Grouting Applications

Summary of PhD Positions:

Chemical grouts used to stabilize old mine workings are made up of a combination of Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) and cement. PFA is a by-product from coal-fired power stations. In 2015 the UK government was the first in the world to announce its commitment to phase out the use of unabated coal power generation by the end of 2025. This closure of coal-fired stations will cease the production of PFA, leaving no other option but the investigation of substitute materials that can be used to supplement grout mixes.

9. PhD Position in Microalgae as biocatalysts for biopolymers production

Summary of PhD Positions:

Over the last decades, the rapid increase in demand, and therefore production, of synthetic plastics has resulted in considerable energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, along with the release of hazardous pollutants to the environment. Nowadays, Plastic pollution has become one of the most crucial environmental concerns. Plastic production has exceeded 8300 million tonnes (MT) since 1950s, 380 MT in 2015 alone, and around 80% of plastic waste is present in the environment, especially oceans or landfill. On the other hand, biopolymers have been recognized as promising alternatives to replace conventional plastics, as they can be produced from renewable biomass resources and a wide variety of microorganisms, requiring lower energy consumption in comparison. Biopolymers deriving from biological sources include proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, polyesters which are produced from fast-growing microorganisms, such as photosynthetic bacteria and microalgae.

10. PhD Position in Dissecting the molecular mechanisms underlying intestinal inflammation in patients with cystic fibrosis: a multi-dimensional phenotypic study

Summary of PhD Positions:

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting autosomal recessive disorder affecting over 100,000 people in the UK. Whilst respiratory problems are a major problem, most patients also experience gut symptoms and are at an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer. The pathophysiology of gut symptoms is poorly understood. The GRAMPUS-CF Strategic Research Centre (SRC) is a £750k collaboration between 11 institutions and the patient community, led by the principal investigator Prof Alan Smyth, Professor of Child Health, University of Nottingham, aimed at tackling a question, posed by a patient engagement exercise: “How can we relieve GI symptoms, such as stomach pain, bloating and nausea in people with CF?”

11. PhD Position in MRes Exploring Collagen Like Proteins of Bacterial Origin

Summary of PhD Positions:

Collagen is the most abundant and ubiquitous protein in the animal kingdom defined by its unique supercoiled triple-helix structure. Collagens possess several surface behavioral properties which permits their wide application in food, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Till recently collagens were believed to be only present in multicellular animals. However, recent discoveries have demonstrated the presence of collagen like proteins (CLPs) in some bacterial species, that can form triple helix structures. The aim of the current project is to explore CLPs of bacterial origin that can replace traditional substances such as isinglass that causes yeast to precipitate leaving the beer clear. The scientific insights are expected to enable sustainable development of additions to end product. This is a one-year MRes (Master’s by Research) industrially funded research project by Murphy&Sons.

12. PhD Position in Regulation of protein translation in viruses

Summary of PhD Positions:

Viruses are obligate parasites and depend upon the host cell machinery to propagate their own life cycle. One such mechanism involves highly structured regions in the 5’-untranslated region (UTR) of viral mRNAs that protects them from degradation in the cell and also regulates the translation of viral proteins. However, very little is known about the exact mechanism of regulation by 5’-UTRs and their role in promoting host-pathogen interactions for efficient viral protein translation.

14. PhD Position in Magnetic resonance imaging investigations of abnormalities of gastrointestinal function and mechanisms of symptoms in cystic fibrosis

Summary of PhD Positions:

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting disorder affecting over 100,000 people in the UK. Whilst respiratory problems are a major component, most patients with CF also experience gut symptoms and complications. However, the pathophysiology of gut symptoms in CF is poorly understood. Our study hypothesis is that the frequent abdominal symptoms, experienced by patients with CF, arise through a combination of the thickness of the contents of the small bowel, problems with bowel motility, inflammation and dysbiosis. An improved understanding of the gut symptoms in CF and the mechanisms underlying these will help align individual patients with targeted candidate treatments for future clinical trials.

16. PhD Position in Development of handling quality criteria and assessment techniques for eVTOL aircraft

Summary of PhD Positions:

Electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft form the backbone of the future mobility system. There are currently more than 200 eVTOL designs under development. They will be used for short to medium range air travel, especially within congested urban areas. Hence, they must be simply controlled and safe to fly. As such, their flying characteristics must be investigated and defined before entry into service. Flying and controlling an eVTOL aircraft is challenging as an eVTOL flight includes three flight regimes: vertical flight (take-off and landing), horizontal flight (cruise), and transitions between the two. Vertical and horizontal flight regimes have been well defined and understood within aviation domain. The transition regimes are rather new for civil aviation (used only in military aircraft designs, e.g. V-22 Osprey, Harrier, F-35B) and challenging to control.

18. PhD Position in Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering (dynamics/acoustics)

Summary of PhD Positions:

Predicting the vibro-acoustic behavior of structures in contact with water is of primary interest for the naval industry: the noise level on-board must satisfy regulations and should be kept low for comfort of crew and passengers. The radiated noise into water must be controlled to reduce the impact on the marine fauna. Prediction methods typically used in the industry such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) [1] require a mesh to discretize the dynamical equations. To properly describe the physical phenomena, this mesh needs to be refined as frequency increases, leading to prohibitive calculation cost above several hundreds of Hertz for a full-scale surface ship. Over the last decades, novel methods have been developed to propose an alternative at high frequencies.

29. PhD Position in Geoscience and its Role in the Low Carbon Energy Transition

Summary of PhD Positions:

The use of CO2 to displace methane from unconventional reservoirs, like gas shales, offers the potential for simultaneous improved methane recovery and CO2 storage. A clear understanding of the mass transport mechanisms is essential for predicting the gas recovery efficiency due to its impact on how far the CO2 will permeate throughout the reservoir. Unconventional reservoir rocks like shales have complex void spaces, with various surface chemistries and pore types, corresponding to various phases such as organic carbon and inorganic minerals. Due to the high prevalence of microporosity and surface adsorption in shales, the surface diffusion flux constitutes the largest component of the mass transport. This work will aim at predicting the surface diffusion rates, and thence mass transport fluxes, from the surface properties of typical reservoir rocks.

30. PhD Position in Geoscience and its Role in the Low Carbon Energy Transition (2022 start)

Summary of PhD Positions:

This project aims to improve the satellite assessment of the value assigned to carbon credits associated with peatland restoration projects. A new innovative method has been developed that provides a means of precisely quantifying peatland condition using satellite measures of peatland surface motion, this is currently the only effective and economic means of large area monitoring for peatlands. However, the reasons for the variations in observed surface motion of peat are still not understood, and the better they are understood the greater confidence will be in applying surface motion monitoring to quantifying peat condition and carbon value. Porosimetry of peat is key to understanding this relationship.
