2. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The goal of the research is to develop novel outcome measures and biomarkers of CNS and muscle involvement in Mendelian neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophies and metabolic disorders that directly affect both brain and muscle function. These outcome measures will then be used in upcoming clinical trials in which these disorders will be genetically corrected, allowing determination and quantification of disease elements responsive to genetic correction, shedding light on the underlying pathophysiological processes. Methods currently employed include diffusion tensor imaging, tractography, brain resting state fMRI, whole body PET/MRI including DTI of all skeletal muscles. Patients being studied include those with genetic disorders directly affecting both brain and muscle structure and function, such as myotonic dystrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, ALS and GNE myopathy.

10. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We seek recent humanities PhDs whose research operates at the intersection with a relevant data-based field, including, but not limited to, digital humanities, data science, computational linguistics or social science, or information science. In addition, the successful applicant’s interests will align with the Seminar’s goal of investigating how the latency of values involving gender, race, class or the medical normal are encoded into existing data sets and the methodologies that we use to analyze them. Preference will be given to candidates whose work intersects with one or more of the critical fault lines around which the seminar will foster a sustained interdisciplinary dialogue: data before and after the digital divide; the ongoing legacies of nineteenth-century conceptions of data; and the challenge posed by premodern conceptions of scale and individual realities to our contemporary methods of analyzing the distant past. Scholars in any relevant discipline and working on any time period are welcome to apply.

The Gentles lab at Stanford University has postdoc positions available for several projects in analyzing genomic and proteomic data in cancer using systems biology approaches. Our works spans multiple cancer types, using a combination of computational and experimental methods to address questions in tumor biology with a particular interest in the content and organization of the tumor microenvironment, and its influence on patient outcomes and therapy response. As one example, we are interested in understanding immunotherapy response in a rare cancer type called clear cell ovarian cancer. We are generating scRNA-seq, CODEX, and other data on clinical samples with known therapy responses. The aim is to use network modeling to identify critical nodes or edges that can be targeted to modulate relevant pathways in mouse models, and feed these results back into the modeling in an iterative process.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Knowles laboratory employs genetic and genomic methods to study the molecular mechanisms that mediate cardiovascular disease risk and pathophysiology, especially insulin resistance. For genes identified through whole genome studies, we use “dry” and “wet” bench approaches to identify mechanisms by which causal variation is responsible for altered gene structure or function and employ tissue culture and genetic mouse models to identify how encoded factors participate in the disease process. The goal is translation of these findings to the clinic.
