1. Fully Funded PhD Position in neurodegeneration

Summary of PhD Program:

A leading area of pharmaceutical research is based on neuroscience therapeutics with vast resources applied to the discovery and development of drugs for disorders in the central nervous system (CNS). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 8 out of 10 disorders in the 3 highest disability classes are neurological problems and they account for about 12% of deaths worldwide.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Despite the severity of the disease and the rapidly increasing prevalence of PD, the pathogenesis of PD is not sufficiently understood, the therapy is mostly symptomatic, and there are no treatments to cure the disease or slow down the progression of the neurodegeneration. It is therefore crucial to better define the mechanisms leading to the disease and identify targets for therapeutical intervention.

3. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

While AI-based voice assistants (e.g., Siri, Alexa) provide manifold opportunities for consumers, their technological abilities restrict the amount of information submitted during interactions. This can lead to information asymmetries and undesired outcomes for consumers. It can also lead to perceptions of being treated unfairly, which in turn might lead to fewer purchases or churn. Therefore, this project aims to identify, develop, and implement novel interfaces and configurations for AI-based voice assistants that lead to a more balanced alignment of interests.

As a PhD student in this project, you will collect empirical evidence and test first prototypes of AI-based voice assistants that can reduce unfairness perceptions for consumers while ensuring adequate outcomes for providers. Working on this project will provide you with an exciting and responsible job with excellent opportunities for further training and development.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in conservation biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The candidate will identify, via predictive spatial models, where these proglacial alluvial habitats will develop in the coming decades, to forecast what their biodiversity values will be and whether the latter could be at risk because of the potential of these new formed landscapes for infrastructure development (e.g., renewable energy). The candidate will also work on the development of a biodiversity indicator for high-alpine alluvial zones and on understanding how values of this indicator change under different environmental conditions (e.g., elevation, microhabitat structure). The main outcome of the PhD project will be a hierarchical ranking of Swiss alpine landscapes based on their conservation value and vulnerability to potential infrastructure development that will serve as a basis for deciding on the future use and management of these alluvial areas.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cardiac Regulation of Nanoscale Cell Function

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research focuses on the regulation of cardiac myocytes, the cell type that makes the heart contract, especially how calcium release is regulated (and thus the ability of these cells to contract) not only by protein properties but by the spatial arrangement of these proteins at the nanoscale. In this regulation a special role is played by a large intra-SR (sarcoplasmic reticulum) calcium channel, the cardiac ryanodine receptor (RyR). In this SNF funded project we will study changes in RyR regulation during phosphorylation and pathology. The candidate will be able to work with the latest super-resolution imaging methods and have access to advanced technology in the form of the very new MINFLUX technique that enables true molecular resolution in live cells.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in physical geography

Summary of PhD Program:

Predicting the geomorphic response of rivers to floods and even identifying the driving and resisting variables that mediate this response have proven extremely challenging. However, particularly in mountain rivers, most significant flood-related damages are usually caused by morphological changes, like bank erosion and channel widening, sediment erosion and transport, and uprooted and transported trees and wood accumulated at bridges. Therefore, a sound flood hazard and risk assessment must consider these cascading processes, and their quantification is vital for river management. However, their large variability in space and time, complex nature, and the interplay between the several controlling factors make them hardly predictable.

21. Fully Funded PhD Position in Virology

Summary of PhD Program:

Our current understanding of how bats control and tolerate viruses, and in particular our knowledge of how their natural defense system – the innate immune system – responds to virus infections, remains largely unknown. While much scientific progress has been made in recent years, few model systems and molecular tools are available that enable detailed studies of virus infections in bats. In this research project, we will create new bat-specific molecular tools and use our advanced in vitro cell culture models of the bat respiratory epithelium to characterize the natural defense system of bats during virus infections. Since these models are comparable to those available for humans and other animals, we can compare the natural defense system of bats to humans and other animals to help us understand why and how bats control and tolerate emerging viruses better than other mammals. Within the project, the Ph.D. student will help to create a bat-specific molecular toolbox to determine the biological role of type I and III IFNs in bats and other mammals.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geography

Summary of PhD Program:

FiRES focuses on wildfires as a critical example of the type of climate-exacerbated hazards that large parts of Europe are facing. It asks: what factors enable people to prepare, survive, and recover from catastrophic wildfires? Europe has a unique opportunity to tackle the growing wildfire challenge by empowering communities and civil protection personnel with knowledge and skills now before the threat becomes acute across the continent. FiRES aims to assist this process. It will use a comparative case study design to investigate the diverse social geographies of wildfire across rural, regional, and urban sites in six European countries, ranging from fire-prone Mediterranean Europe, and the Alps, to the growing risk of wildfire in northern Europe.
