2. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Single-cell omics aim at charting the different types and properties of all cells in the human body in health and disease. Over the past years, myriads of cellular phenotypes have been defined by methods that mostly required cells to be dissociated and removed from their original microenvironment, thus destroying valuable information about their location and interactions. Growing insights, however, are showing that such information is crucial to understand complex disease states.

7. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The laboratory for Disease Mechanisms in Cancer (KU Leuven, Belgium) is looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher, to perform research on the biology of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) within the framework of a research consortium consisting of 5 Belgian research teams. T-ALL hijacks normal T-cell development pathways to cause a malignant disease. From the numerous studies on the genomic changes that occur in T-ALL, it is clear that chromatin structure, transcription and translation are major processes that are deregulated in T-ALL.

However, how specific mutations cooperate and interact to change the cellular mRNA and protein metabolism remains poorly studied. In this project, we aim to deconvolute T-ALL development at single-cell resolution in accurate mouse models of T-ALL by mapping chromatin, transcriptional and protein changes from the early stages of leukemia initiation to the progression towards acute disease.

11. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Political knowledge is an important pillar of a healthy democracy. However, rapid changes in the digital information environment have contributed to a growing number of uninformed, misinformed or selectively informed citizens. This project not only aims to better understand the causes of missing, incorrect, or selective political knowledge, but also investigates the effects of possible solutions. More specifically, it studies a number of key strategies to reduce the negative consequences of young people’s lack of or poor use of media and information through social media influencers and fact-checking interventions.

This work will be carried out under the supervision of Prof. Simon Kuhn. The research group is specifically interested in Transport Processes and Reactions, with expertise centered on experimental and computational aspects of transport limitations in chemical engineering applications, and their scale-up from lab to production scale. We exploit microreaction technology for the continuous manufacturing of fine chemicals, and to efficiently integrate non-conventional and green energy sources (e.g. ultrasound, photo- and electrochemistry) to achieve sustainable processes. The rational approach of combining numerical and experimental techniques contributes to reactor design toolboxes for process intensification.

13. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Dysregulation of Ca2+ handling is a key feature and a mediator of the pathophysiology of cardiomyocytes in heart failure and ageing. We have an open post-doc position to investigate Ca2+ signalling between InsP3R, RyRs and connexin hemichannels in ventricular arrhythmias in human heart failure and ageing. This position builds on recent our recent identification of a contribution of Ca2+ release via RyRs to the activation of connexin hemichannels (De Smet et al., JCI 2021) and of InsP3R-RyR crosstalk (Jin et al., BRIC 2022) in arrhythmia generation. In this project, we will extend our analysis to probe how InsP3R signalling is involved in hemichannel opening and the conditions under which this pathway is engaged.

15. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Centre for mathematical Plasma-Astrophysics (CmPA) of the KULeuven has received funding from the Belgian federal government (DEFRA project AIDefSpace) to study and develop modern AI/ML techniques to detect and forecast dangerous activity in space weather, considering ionosphere, maghnetosphere and solar active regions. We are processing different data sources relative to the ionosphere and the magnetosphere and high-resolution magnetograms and multi-spectral images of the Sun.

21. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Laboratory for Translational Breast Cancer Research (LTBCR), headed by Prof. Christine Desmedt, has three main research axes. Firstly, the LTBCR aims at unraveling the breast cancer-adiposity connection. There is a growing proportion of overweight and obese women and the impact of adiposity (having a body composition with a high proportion of adipose tissue) on breast cancer is a growing major medical concern. However, personalized breast cancer treatments have largely neglected the impact of adiposity on its biology, progression and treatment efficacy. In the lab, using state-of-the-art technologies, we aim at identifying potential strategies to tailor breast cancer treatment according to adiposity.

25. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In this project, the role of small open reading frames (smORFs) and their protein products (smORF-encoded polypeptides (SEPs)) will be investigated during lager beer fermentation using state-of-the-art genomic and proteomic approaches. SEPs are classified as polypeptides with less than 33 amino acids and unlike other small proteins/peptides, SEPs are not derived from longer precursors but arise directly by translation of smORFs. Over the last years, SEPs have been increasingly shown to be involved in fundamental biological regulatory functions. However, there are major computational hurdles to identify smORFs (and SEPs) from genome sequences and as such they are detected when expressed in situ.

27. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The waste heat potential in Europe is huge and about 20% of thermal energy demand has a temperature between 100-200°C. Waste heat recovery is recommended to increase energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions of energy intensive industrial sectors. High temperature heat pumps that can reach temperatures up to 200°C find an interesting application potential in such heat recovery in industrial processes. Our research group, belonging to the Mechanical Engineering Department and located at the KU Leuven campus in Geel, works on these topics and strive to continuous innovation in the field. It is also linked to the research activities in Energyville.
