2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Context – High-performant and power-dense electromechanical systems (e.g. weaving looms, compressors, gearboxes, drivetrains, …) need oil lubrication to reduce friction and resulting wear in rolling element bearings to efficiently dissipate heat from the contact points. On the one hand, these systems contain multiple oil-lubricated bearings of various types, which typically operate under different and/or varying conditions (load, speed, temperature). Ideally, the lubrication properties have been adapted to these operating conditions. However, in practice each individual bearing operates under suboptimal lubrication conditions, leading globally to an increased Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) due to reduced energy efficiency, reduced component lifetime and increased maintenance and downtime.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Materials Modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

Leading Edge Erosion (LEE) is a severe erosive wear mechanism which involves progressive material removal from the blade-tip leading edges, due to (sub-)surface fatigue. The repeated high-speed impact of water droplets induces severe pressure shock-waves in the blade material leading to initiation, propagation and coalescence of cracks and eventually material loss, pit formation, delamination and disintegration of the structural integrity. Although wind turbines are designed and built for an operational lifespan of 25 years at maximum energy capacity, the current generation of turbines require often extensive maintenance after 5-10 years due to severe LEE and reduced energy production. LEE in modern turbines can even be triggered in less than 2 years in service (due to the larger blades and speeds), especially in offshore or coastal locations with high-rated wind conditions and precipitation, e.g. the North Sea.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Law

Summary of PhD Program:

As PhD Candidate in legal history, you will analyse the historical use of emergency powers and emergency legislation during the 20th century and early 21st century in Europe. The project EMERGE hypothesizes that the enactment of emergency legislation determines substantial and lasting changes to fundamental rights, the principle of the rule of law as well as the commitment to liberal values of equality before the law and universalism of rights. This hypothesis will be tested against five key moments in the constitutional and legal history of five European jurisdictions during the last century (c.1914-c.2020).

The PhD Candidates will analyse the historical context, the law and the practice of emergency in five countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Romania, and the United Kingdom). The first PhD position is concerned with Belgium, the second PhD position with France, the third one with Germany (including the GDR), the fourth one with Romania and the fifth one with the United Kingdom (with a focus of Northern Ireland).

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this 4-year project is to develop and optimize a reactor that utilizes magnetic fields for intensified CO2 capture and conversion. By employing time and spatially varying magnetic fields, materials with different functionalities and magnetic properties, are driven towards a specific spatial organization in the reactor, leading to an intensified CO2 conversion. This type of reactor is also referred to as a magnetic field assisted fluidized bed reactor (MAFB). The project will investigate the optimal magnetic fields and coil design required to achieve this behavior through a combination of experiments and computational modeling. You will work closely with fellow researchers who will model the reactor’s hydrodynamics, with inclusion of reaction kinetics. Moreover, they will obtain data by testing the experimental reactor in-situ to support the modelling results for the hydrodynamic and magnetic model.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in medical sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

The Lung Research Lab of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Ghent University Hospital is looking for a highly motivated researcher to join the team. More specifically, we are looking for a PhD student who will be involved in translational research into the pathogenesis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Worldwide more than 300 million people suffer from COPD and more than 3 million people die from COPD each year, making it the third leading cause of death. Disturbances in pulmonary cell death pathways (including apoptosis, necroptosis and ferroptosis), as well as impaired clearance of dead and dying cells (also called efferocytosis), contribute to the chronic inflammation and tissue destruction in patients with COPD.

The aims of this FWO funded research project are to characterize the pathogenic contribution of different modes of regulated cell death and to elucidate the defects in the different phases of efferocytosis in both experimental and human COPD. We offer the opportunity to work in a dynamic and multidisciplinary academic research environment. As this project is a collaboration with the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, a research stay in Australia is possible and encouraged.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social and Cultural Anthropology

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral student will carry out research on the tradition of wall paintings in the history of North-East Congo, drawing on the collections of wall painting photographs at the RMCA and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). The work will be based on field research, archival research, and collection research. The researcher will trace the history of the murals in the “contact” zone of colonial society. Instead of focusing on the colonial patronage that helped to reinvigorate mural painting traditions on several occasions, more attention will be given to the local networks in which artists operated. The aim is to retrieve biographical data on the artists and to ascertain how they built on an earlier tradition and how and from whom they learned their skills. The researcher will compare the murals with carved objects of figurative and geometric scenes and photographs of pre-colonial rock art.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Linguistics

Summary of PhD Program:

Listening to a language which is not one’s own native language can be surprisingly difficult, even for advanced learners. This is especially so when the speaker has an unfamiliar regional or non-native accent. While listeners can easily deal with variation in their native language, coping with accent variation in a non-native language is more difficult. In the case of English, with its millions of native and non-native speakers, language learners need to be able to understand a wide variety of accents in English.

The aim of the project is to examine to what extent English as a Foreign Language learners experience difficulties when listening to regional and non-native accented speech, which aspects especially hamper intelligibility and how we can train learners on the perception of accented speech in English. To that end, you will run listening experiments which will inform us on the perception of phonological variation by non-native listeners, and set up training sessions to enhance learners’ ability to understand accented speech. Through the project, you will gain a deeper understanding of what causes intelligibility problems and how these can be remedied through training.

Summary of PhD Program:

Personal Genomics is now becoming a reality, thanks to the steadily increasing availability of affordable sequencing technology. Despite the great promise of genomics for personal health and precision medicine, most institutions, as well as individuals, are hesitant to share genomic data. Principal reasons are the risk of unethical handling of the data, for example leading to higher insurance costs at the level of individuals. Hence, the build-up of trust for sharing this highly sensitive, identifiable personal information is critical, individually, nation-wide, and internationally.

28. Fully Funded PhD Position in Animal Sciences and Aquatic Ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

Silver (Ag) is a widely used antimicrobial compound with substantial releases to surface water, that can be toxic to aquatic organisms in the nanogram per liter range. For this reason, the European Commission has recently listed Ag as a priority pollutant under the Water Framework Directive, and proposed an environmental quality standard (EQS) of 10 ng/L. As for other metals, it is known that certain water quality variables such as pH, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, can affect bioavailability and toxicity by more than 100-fold. However, there is a lack of experimental data and models to predict chronic silver toxicity to aquatic organisms.
