1. 25 Fully Funded PhD Position in MSCA COFUND project Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Future (HAIF)

Summary of PhD Program:

The Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Future (HAIF) doctoral training programme at the University of Turku invites applications for fixed-term doctoral researcher positions based on employment contracts. Employment starts on Monday 18 August 2025 at the earliest, but at the latest on Friday 29 August 2025, unless otherwise agreed. The duration of the full-time position is four years.

Doctoral researchers are committed to make the research and doctoral postgraduate studies according to rules of their Doctoral Programme and to complete their training within a time equivalent to four years of full-time study. The HAIF associated partners provide national or international 4-6 months secondments and other training activities to the doctoral researchers.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in astrophysics

Summary of PhD Program:

FINCA is seeking a Doctoral Researcher / Project Researcher in astronomy, more specifically in the field of time-domain astrophysics. This work is part of the project Ambiguous Progenitors of Powerful Hydrogen-rich Supernovae (APoPHiS) funded by the Research Council of Finland and led by Dr. Tuomas Kangas. The selected person will conduct observational studies of newly discovered luminous and superluminous hydrogen-rich supernovae.

This includes performing astronomical observations, light-curve and spectroscopic analysis, statistical sample studies, and comparing the observations to state-of-the-art numerical simulations and theoretical models. The research is mainly performed in the ultraviolet-optical-infrared regime, and will make use of, e.g., the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) co-owned by the University of Turku, and new facilities such as the Son of X-Shooter (SOXS) at ESO.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The project examines the impacts and antecedents of growing residential socioeconomic segregation. We approach this central theme of urban studies from a sociological perspective focusing on people’s life courses (University of Turku subproject) and from the perspective of the spatial concentration of educational, psychological and genetic risk factors (Institute for Health and Welfare,THL, subproject). The project researcher will take part in both subprojects together with researchers from the University of Turku and from the THL. Both subprojects use quantitative statistical methods and comprehensive register data.
