12. Fully Funded PhD Position in geology and geochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The Oslo Rift contains marine black shales deposited during anoxic conditions in the Cambrian and Early Ordovician. The shales are enriched in organic matter, sulfur and a range of heavy metals. During weathering, the sulfides oxidize and metals are released to the environment. For these reasons, the shales represent a major environmental problem during construction work such as tunnels and roads. This project aims at understanding how the shale mineralogy, background maturation and metamorphism influence the reactivity, weathering and the metal release. We will combine fieldwork on natural exposures with drill cores and road sections. The candidate will get experience with fieldwork, mapping, geochemistry of rocks and water, thermodynamic modelling, and petrography.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Fluid Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

Access to fresh water is the foundation for life on Earth that poses severe restrictions and requirements for life in regions that contend with water scarcity, a problem that will increase in the future with the growing effects of climate change. Water scarcity is not longer a distant problem. In 2022 Europe has been hit by a severe drought impacting agriculture and energy production. A fog net is a low cost, efficient and simple technology for harvesting water from the atmosphere.

The goal of this sustainability oriented project is to develop a new understanding of the fundamental fluid mechanics on and through fog nets to devise new designs to optimize their water yield. The planned work is experimental, to be performed in our lab facilities, and is also expected to involve theoretical models of the complex flow. Field work is planned together with a non-profit organization in Morocco to give ways to test the concepts developed in the projects and there will be opportunities to work with international collaborators.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social Anthropology

Summary of PhD Program:

Amber is a fossil resin secreted by plants between 300 and 16 million years ago, mostly during phases of climate breakdown and ecological crises. Today, geologists and palaeontologists believe that the study of amber specimens can help us answering key questions about the planet’s climatic history, and understanding how and why species adapted, or failed to adapt, during previous phases of mass extinction. Amber is also a well-known and sought-after organic gemstone, fuelling violent mining economies from Myanmar to Russia, Ukraine, and Mexico, and constitutes a global market increasingly driven by Chinese demand. Amber thus offers a privileged entry point to interrogate the current moment characterised by growing extractivism, trade, environmental crises, and conflict. And it is a compelling lens through which we can address some of the key empirical and theoretical challenges posed by the Anthropocene.

24. Fully Funded PhD Position in Philosophy of Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to challenge (but also to build on) existing accounts of explanation in philosophy of biology and life sciences, such as current accounts of genetic causation as well as mechanist and interventionist ideas of explanation. It is also a central goal to explicate how several explanatory frameworks, such as for example biophysics and molecular biology, may compete and/or integrate from the viewpoint of self-assembly processes. The project aims at building bridges between mechanist and organicist views of life, to provide new answers to questions of scientific explanation, the relation between scales and levels of explanation, and ultimately to the question of how to understand life itself.
