Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this project is to obtain a complete 3D model of the Central Alps, in which the PhD candidate of the announced position focuses on the 3D modelling of the Helvetic sediment nappes and underlying basement units. The expected 3D model provides the base for a tectonic 3D restoration yielding in the 3D paleogeography of the proximal to distal former European passive continental margin prior to inversion during collision tectonics. Besides 3D geometry, also constraints on the thermo-chronological evolution of the Helvetic realm will be incorporated for the restoration process. Besides building up on existing literature data the tools to be applied are own field investigations, data compilation and accomplishment using 2D GIS and 3D computer modelling.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nutrient uptake and homeostasis in Trypanosoma brucei
Summary of PhD Program:
The unicellular parasite Trypanosoma brucei is the causative agent of sleeping sickness in humans and Nagana in cattle. Besides their impact on public health, these parasites are useful model organisms in cell and molecular biology. Like other unicellular parasites, T. brucei depend on the import of amino acids for their metabolism. Therefore, amino acid transporters represent suitable drug targets and potential drug delivery systems (Macedo et al., 2017, Mathieu et al., 2017, Schmidt et al., 2018).

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Plant Physiology
Summary of PhD Program:
A PhD position is available at the University of Bern (Switzerland). The research project aims at determining the role of organic nitrogen (N) for plant performance. There is increasing evidence that plants not only use ammonium or nitrate as N source, but also acquire organic N, e.g. amino acids and small peptides, from the soil. It remains however unclear how much the direct uptake of organic nitrogen contributes to plant nitrogen needs. Our research has contributed considerably to the current understanding of the uptake and reallocation of organic N in plants. We intend to extend this research by exploring Arabidopsis accessions with altered regulation of organic N utilisation. The international and interdisciplinary research environment at the Institute of Plant Sciences and the University of Bern offers an excellent opportunity for career development.

11. 04 Fully Funded PhD Position in inhibitor design against bacterial toxins
Summary of PhD Program:
Bacteria of the genus Clostridium cause severe animal and human diseases. β-Pore forming toxins (βPFTs) form a major group of their virulence factors. They are secreted by different pathogenic clostridia and cause cell damage by forming pores in the plasma membrane of host cells. βPFTs share common structures and molecular mechanisms, making them attractive targets for the development of anti-virulence therapies. In a collaborative research approach between three faculties at the University of Bern, we aim to design and validate peptide inhibitors against clostridial βPFTs using a combination of computational peptide design and structural knowledge of the toxins.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Anesthesiology
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Veterinary Anesthesiology at the Vetsuisse Faculty, Universi-ty of Bern, has a doctoral position (Dr. med. vet.) available on the topic of “EEG Evaluation of Depth of Anesthesia under Propofol.” Ensuring sufficient depth of anesthesia during general anesthesia is crucial for the success of the procedure and the well-being of the patient. Several methods based on electroencephalographic monitoring have been developed in humans. Leveraging our expertise in neurophysiology, our group is conducting several research projects to adapt and refine these methods for use in animals. By link-ing these measurement methods (pharmacodynamics) with the dosage of the anesthetic agent (pharmacokinetics), it is possible to better understand their ef-fects.
