Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Integrated Program in Cancer and Data Science (ICADS) at Moffitt serves to train the next generation of leaders in Cancer and Data Science. Over thirty faculty members, who work together at the interface of cancer research and data science, serve as mentors and co-mentors. The program is cross-disciplinary, spanning every Division at Moffitt including: 1) basic science; 2) population science; 3) clinical science; 4) translational science; and 5) quantitative science.
Postdoctoral trainees in the program are paired into training teams that design a mentored research project that addresses a critical issue in cancer utilizing data science approaches (e.g., biostatistics, statistical genomics, bioinformatics). We are recruiting postdoctoral fellows interested in developing novel spatial transcriptomic and metabolomic techniques for the study of melanoma metastasis and immunotherapy responses to aggressive skin cancers. The postdoctoral researcher will undertake two projects described below:
Project 1: Studying the spatial distribution, functional status, and cellular composition of the tumor microenvironment as it relates to immunotherapy response in melanoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. Tumor evolution proceeds at a rapid pace. Drug development does not. In order for cancer therapy to achieve a durable response over years rather than months, it must “evolve” as quickly as the tumor does. In contrast to a cell’s DNA, its RNA – the transcriptome – is a highly dynamic machinery which operates within ranges, orders of magnitudes wider than those of the genome. Its role in shaping clonal evolution and implementing a cell’s response to its environment is undoubted, yet nowhere close to understood. We seek applications from a computer scientist with a Ph.D. and strong background in machine learning to develop a new class of temporal biomarkers of cell fitness using supervised machine learning approaches.
