6. Fully Funded PhD Position in materials Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Cellulose is one of the most abundant materials on the planet, and cellulose fibrils are strong, lightweight and biodegradable. Key to their future use as rheology modifiers in e.g. paints or cosmetics, in cellulose packaging films or in 2D or 3D printing inks, is control of their hierarchical structure. Elucidating the multiscale behavior in flow as well as when formed into films remains a challenge. In a collaboration between Lund University (Prof Karen Edler), Chalmers (Prof Roland Kádár) and the ForMAX beamline at MAX IV (Dr Kim Nygård), this project will combine rheology, polarized light imaging and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) on suspensions and dynamic mechanical analysis with SAXS on thin films in new simultaneous measurements, developed recently at MAX IV.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Structural Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Gut bacteria play a fundamental role in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dysregulation of microbially derived metabolite production, in particular the production of imidazole propionate (ImP) was recently associated with diabetes. Specifically, ImP was shown to be increased in subjects with type 2 diabetes, and ImP was shown to impair glucose tolerance. ImP is produced by a specific bacterial enzyme, called urocanate reductase (UrdA), which was recently structurally characterized by us. Thus, a direct link between the microbiota and type 2 diabetes was established. Therefore, there is an urgent need to clarify the full molecular mechanism of action behind the production of ImP by applying time-resolved studies. The aim of the PhD project is to arrive at a detailed molecular understanding of the regulation or UrdA.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The overall goal of the PhD project is to gain new insights to the mechanisms and consequences of sensing and signaling in predator-prey interactions in aquatic foodwebs. Prey organisms sense predators by chemical cues and respond by launching defensive traits such as vertical migration, bioluminescence, or toxin production, to avoid predation. The responses contribute to large scale phenomena such as harmful algal bloom formation and carbon sequestration. In the research group “Signals in the Sea” we isolate the chemical alarm-cues, determine their structure, and explore their mechanism of action from cellular to ecosystem level. You will use a combination of classical biological methods and state of the art techniques from chemistry and physics (LC-MS and GC-MS, AI driven microscopy, image-, and motion-analysis) to explore signaling systems and their consequences in aquatic ecology.
