2. PhD Programs in Public Health Sciences
Summary of PhD Positions:
The doctoral student’s thesis work will be conducted within the framework of the research program REGAPS (Responding to and Reducing Gambling Problems – Studies in Help-seeking, Measurement, Comorbidity and Policy Impacts). The purpose of REGAPS is to generate knowledge about, among other, the regulation of gambling markets and the design of policies to prevent the harmful effects of gambling, as well as about treatment of and other interventions aimed at people with gambling problems.
The thesis project can be freely designed within the framework of the fourth or fifth workpackage in the program which deals with policy and regulation of gambling markets – nationally or internationally – and its consequences for individuals and society. Research questions can for example deal with different types of governance, regulation and organization, including actors and conflicts of interest in the gambling area. Organization, management and financing of care and treatment as well as attitudes to gambling and gambling regulation may also be relevant. Comparisons between countries, over time or between policy areas may also be relevant.

5. PhD Programs in Gravitational quantum physics
Summary of PhD Positions:
Recently appointed Wallenberg Academy Fellow Dr Magdalena Zych is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated PhD candidate with passion for research and desire to learn new skills to join her newly forming group at the University of Stockholm. The research of the group lies at the intersection of quantum theory and general relativity. In particular, the group seeks novel approaches to develop understanding of the regime where quantum theory and general relativity overlap.
The successful candidate, depending on their interests, will carry out research in theoretical physics that can involve: developing a mathematical framework describing composite quantum particles at the interface with general relativity, developing proposals for new laboratory test of fundamental physics at the quantum and gravity interplay, developing tools for describing the phenomenology of quantum spacetimes or causal structures involving composite quantum particles or the notion of quantum coordinates.

6. PhD Programs in Theoretical Chemical Physics
Summary of PhD Positions:
The photochemistry of energy-rich azides (R-N=N=N) shows a great diversity in organic synthesis and in the important field of click chemistry, which was awarded the Nobel prize in Chemistry 2022. The nature of the populated excited state opens pathways to different reaction intermediates and the rate of formation of photoproducts can be detected in time-resolved experiments. However, the precise determination of short-lived species and how they are formed often remains elusive and ambiguous.
A broad spectrum of advanced quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations in excited states and in solutions will be used to reach unprecedented mechanistic insight into non-adiabatic transitions between different reaction intermediates with varying spin states in solution. The aim is to facilitate rational design of selective photochemical synthesis, in industrial and pharmaceutical applications.

7. PhD Programs in Neutrino Astroparticle Physics with the IceCube Observatory
Summary of PhD Positions:
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, Antarctica, is the world’s largest neutrino telescope, operated by an international collaboration of about 350 scientists in 14 countries. IceCube pursues a broad array of science objectives from particle physics to astronomy. Chief among these is using the weakly-interacting neutrino particle to explore extreme astrophysical environments, complementing observations made with photons. With the discovery by IceCube of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, emerging evidence linking some neutrinos to supermassive black holes, together with the first detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo detectors, the era of Multi-Messenger Astronomy is underway.

9. PhD Programs in Marine Biology
Summary of PhD Positions:
The Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences invites applications for a four-year PhD position part of the project: “What are the environmental risks associated with seabed mining for rare earth elements in the Baltic Sea? Quantifying impacts on benthic biodiversity and ecosystem processes”. The transition to a low carbon economy is increasing global demand for rare Earth elements (REE), driven by the growth of infrastructure necessary for renewable energy and electrification of the transport sector.
How to sustainably meet this increased demand of REE is a vital challenge for societies around the world. Seabed mining (SBM), previously not economically viable, is now considered a feasible way to meet this demand of REE. There are now multiple initiatives exploring the potential of SBM, one of them in advanced stage in the Baltic Sea. It is thus urgent to understand the environmental risks associated with SBM before the projected expansion of this industry.

10. PhD Programs in Marine Biology
Summary of PhD Positions:
The Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences invites applications for a four-year PhD position part of the project ‘The use of OLCI/Sentinel-3 and MSI/Sentinel-2 data for assessing the effect of climate change in coastal and inland waters’. Ocean colour research allows for a synoptic analysis of marine and inland waters. Besides assessing the spatial distribution and phenology of phytoplankton blooms it also allows for a deeper understanding of the physiochemical drivers (such as wind speed and light attenuation) of phytoplankton growth and production.
By combining MERIS data from the ESA ENVISAT program (2002-2012) and OLCI data (since 2016) from the Copernicus program (Sentinel-3 satellite) we can now derive long term time series of essential climate change variables for climate change analyses, especially when combined with other ocean colour data and/or in situ data as well.

16. PhD Programs in Physical Geography
Summary of PhD Positions:
Agricultural expansion, forestry, hydropower and road infrastructure have heavily altered the hydrological regimes of Swedish wetlands. As a result, there is a growing interest in their hydrological restoration. Yet, hydrological restoration should also target climate change mitigation by controlling resulting greenhouse gas emissions. Knowledge of hydrological regimes is compulsory to guide optimal wetland restoration, but a lack of hydrological monitoring limits this understanding.
This project combines hydrological modelling, artificial intelligence, earth observations, and state-of-the-art techniques tracking water levels from space to define the hydrological regimes in 53 wetlands of international importance. The main objective of the applicant will be to quantify comprehensive water surface extent and changes, the spatial and temporal variability of water levels, and define guidelines to prioritise wetland restoration, maximising ecosystem health and climate change mitigation.

17. PhD Programs in Physical Geography
Summary of PhD Positions:
Paleoclimate proxy records indicate the existence of multi-centennial climate variability in Earth’s climate system but the cause and mechanism of this variability remain unknown. This project aims to use an Earth System Model to perform several simulations under different climate states such as past warm and cold periods, as well as present-day climate and future scenarios.
We are looking for a PhD student who will work on this project that aims to investigate the multi-centennial climate variability from the past to the future. The successful candidate will perform long climate model simulations using an Earth System Model EC-Earth for different climate scenarios. The candidate will analyse the model output to investigate the cause of the multi-centennial variability and estimate how the different external forcing would impact such low-frequency variabilities. The PhD student will work in a team at Stockholm University that is strongly engaged in both national and international collaborations.

19. PhD Programs in Physical Geography
Summary of PhD Positions:
In Sweden, there are many thousands of contaminated areas with very high levels of heavy metals and other toxic products from industrial activities. Mining sites and especially warp piles in Sweden often contain high levels of heavy metals and other toxic compounds. The pollutants leak out from the warp piles with rainwater and spread to surface and groundwater affecting large areas with serious consequences for the environment.
Trees standing on warp piles absorb pollutants in the annual growth and can be used as indicators for polluted soil and groundwater and enable a pollution history during the life of the tree. This project focused how trees can be used as forensic methods and which sample strategies will be used when investigate a pollutant site and how is toxic substances are spread. How will contaminants spread in changing climate?
